just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first!)

my first moped! from a local farm here in SK, Canada.

(although it has a sticker on it from Ernie's Chainsaw Shop in Sussex, N.B.)

1978 puch maxi - 2hp engine, 3750 miles.

I paid $500. A little steep perhaps, but there seem to be next to none around these parts!

first issues...

Won't start

Broken throttle cable

Broken throttle grip

Throttle cable routed incorrectly

Broken petcock lever

Brake cable adjusters both broken at the levers

Ridiculous mirrors

Rotten tires

First off were the mirrors. Then I pulled the carb, disassembled and cleaned it up. I fixed the throttle cable _enough for now_ so that it works, by using an adjustable cable stop from my scooter and a bike cable I had from another project. I cut a slot into what's left of the petcock lever so I could at least turn it with a screwdriver to get it flowing.

After cleaning up all the dry grass, mud and hay, I put in a new spark plug and it fired right up. Reaches top speed with no trouble at all! I'm really surprised how fast this thing goes.

My first order is to replace the tires. I just blew the rear one this evening, so I gotta get on that! I've done some searching, but what are some recommendations?

I like the look and sound of the Michelin M62 Gazelle, but I don't know that it will fit? The tires currently on it are 2 - 17 Continentals.

Any other advice? I'm open to suggestions. I think I'm gonna keep this one pretty much stock, just de-restrict it as much as I can and fiddle with the jets.

I'll keep this one for my wife and start dreamin up a custom. :)

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

good luck and have fun!

I wonder about the gazelle's, i bet they would be real tought to get on those skinny old mk1 puch rims that came with the 2.0 tires.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

Nice Moped. I don't think $500 is to much, though most people on here will say anything over $150 is to much. Vintage mopeds, for the most part, aren't cheap anymore, unless they are complete junk. You got a nice classic ped for half the price of a new Sprint. The Michelin Gazelles are the best, they are what I have on my Newport. I think the throttle on a Puch is a very poor design. I used a cheap Chinese motorcycle throttle on mine, one designed to use a cable with an end on it, and a barrel type adjuster, then spliced 2 different throttle cables together, one that fit the Bing carb, the other that fit the new throttle. Good Luck, and have fun with it. Peace. Jerry.

Those rims should be the same as my '80 Newport, the tires fit the rims fine, I almost had a problem with the tires rubbing on the forks and swing arm. Peace. Jerry.

Gazelles are generally acknowleged to be the best, but they're a pain to get on. Good luck with them.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

Compared to Savas, Gazelles are indeed hard to get on. But I used a liberal amount of Ru-Glyde tire mounting lubricant, along with a couple of 6" tire irons, and they popped right on. That's a nice list of links, I have used several of those places, with no problems. Peace. Jerry.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

Another Canadian! Let's start a prairies-wide moped gang. We could rally down the Trans Canada.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

i like the sava mc 11's i think they are. i really love those tires. i am going to switch when its time for new ones just to see a comparison though.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

Thanks for the links and feedback!

I ordered up some gazelles from Ron Ayers, hopefully they will get here before summer is over! The other essentials from Treats.

I found a tube locally so I got out on the road again, and I just got pulled over by the COPS tonight! That didn't take long... :)

After 20 mins of standing by the curb, they let me go because they don't know what to say. There are almost no mopeds around these parts at all. I had phoned the provincial vehicle licensing dept before I hit the streets and they told me I don't need plates, just a learner's licence and a helmet.

So I'm off and running again until the next cop checks me out :)

And I'm sooo down for a moped gang out here in the prairies. If only we had more mopeds! There must be some more shacked up somewhere in all those barns.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first

Yeah, at least round these parts barns are like required to have at least 1 moped, usually majorly messed up by several farm kids. Once in a while you get lucky and the youngest 1 had some mechanical aptitude.

Re: just bought a moped - 1978 puch maxi (my first!)

Seat looks bad too. I paid $200 for mine but it is almost all there. Missing side covers and air cleaner. Got it to turn over but needs adjusting. I will add exhaust and new carb asap. I am also looking to by 17" 5 star rims.

Someone on MA makes really nice replacement seat covers for reasonable $. If you're on here, give yourself a well deserved plug.
