OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do say?

Not A moped at all, but to me, It reminds me of the spirit of The old VW beatle.

Here is a bunch of photos of the "Car" I'm talking about.

Here is the inside:

It Runs On a 200CC single cyl honda motorcycle engine or a two cyl hnda 650cc (50 miles top speed and 72mpg for the 250, and 65mph top speed 70mpg for the 650)

Here is the motor, looks easy to work on:

Its also avalible as a sedan

Here are a few more photos of them:

They are 3 wheeled, and classified as motorcycles. that excludes them from all the "bloat" modern cars have. No computers, no ABS, No airbags, no tire pressure monitors, and no OBD system.

Just a car, And a cheap one at that. They cost between 4500 and 6000.

Ok, so they are not as good looking as a smart car, not as fast as a Mini , and don't handle like a GTI, but they are Simple little beasts, offer a engine set that is abundant and cheap to repair, can be modified with out fear of emmisions tests, and are REALLY good on gas.

Do you think these will sell here? I've already placed an order for truck with the 650cc engine. and can't wait to start tinkering.

The reason I post this up here is Most car drivers are hands off. they take it in for oil changes, and everything else, but Moped owners are hands on. they don't mind getting into it.

This little car appeals to me on that level. Its a simple design with some limitations (just like our Mopeds) that seems to have great potential.

Let me know you thoughts!

You should have seen the car I saw the other day. Guys back was against the rear window. No trunk. Looked like he was sitting on the rear tire. The front was flat like that one. I was amazed. I don't know where the guy was placing his feet. Didn't look like it had much leg room. Or a place for a motor either. A real deathtrap in my opinion. But I bet it got great mileage.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

cool...

Like an update of one of these... Lambretta and Guzzi also made a 3-wheeler

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

I think you saw a Mercedes Smart car (mentioned) My next door neighbor has one , Weird it even handles well and is actually quite roomy . Went up and over a speedbump at 10mph and almost got whiplash - real short wheelbase . German engineering, gotta love it , matter of time before an american engineer comes out with another 3 cylinder Chevy Sprint and release it 10 years before it's ready .

Bruce Edwards /

There's one across the street from my building. It actually has good leg room and trunk space considering it's only 8'8" long.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

any one else notice the cow in the background was photoshoped in??

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Good eye. That pic must be from the co.'s webite.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

just a modern tuktuk

id rather have a cushman

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Those are still pretty easy to find but if I was going with three wheels I'd rather have one of these.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Anyone remember Urkles (sp?) car? Now that was a pimp ride.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

First of all, it is Chinese. It has the same brand name as a Chinese noped I saw here and on eBay recently. Second, is it street legal in the U.S.? I just can't see DOT and the EPA allowing something to be street legal that isn't loaded down with safety and emissions equipment. I like it, but it still doesn't get good enough gas mileage. I'll stick with my mopeds and scooter, and use my truck only when absolutely necessary. Peace. Jerry.

It is DOT and EPA approved for every state but CA (big surprise there)

Its classified as a motorcycle, hence the lack of requirements for airbags,abs,obd2, and all the other needless crap they put on modern cars.

I actually found this on a Moped sales site, and fell in love.

Yes its china made, but so is everything these days.

Once you get over the fact that your driving a motorcycle with a cage, I think its cool. As for mileage, 70-80 miles per gallon is very hard to beat at any cost for a car or truck.

And I think my Wildfire Moped that I have on order will fit in the bed just fine, so Woo Hooo!

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Oh yea, who needs antilock brakes and airbags. WTF is wrong with you guys? ABS is awesome and doesn't stop you from being able to slide around if you want to.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Hey, I'm not knocking ABS, Air bags, Static Traction controls, or tire pressure monitoring systems.

They are all cool. I just think they have NO place whatsoever being manditory equipment on all autos.

The Insurance companies have pushed and pushed for needless laws to be added requireing this "safety" equipment. And as a result all autos are now burdend with a bunch of extra weight that makes them get much less milage, and increases costs a ton.

If you choose to get a car with all the bells and goodies, good for you, but I think it should be an OPTION not a rule.

Here is this little 3 wheeler that bypasses all that crap by leaving off a wheel and getting a motorcycle certification instead.

I think its great, but mark my words if they sell well, insurance will force the goverment to come down hard on these things.

I sorry that was a rant, but I'm a mechanic, and I see useless sh!t loaded into compact cars all the time.

My old 1979 VW Rabbit was basic, somewhat safe, and got great mileage ( 35mpg) without all the modern computer controled engine systems.

Imagine what a car the Size of a Rabbit could get with a plain Gas engine if it could use a modern engine and computer system, but with out all the bloat.

I'd bet it would be close to 55mpg.

Just look at the mileage figures from a 1995 Geo Metro Xfi

59 highway!

Name a non hybrid car that can come close to that today.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

i was just looking at one of those today Diahatsu mini cab over diesel 4x4 dump bed 5 speed right hand drive they wanted $8000 for it

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

those Wildfires are not honda engines they are chinese.....Reverse engineered hondas..... not the best quality, good idea, just a little to flimsy all the way around

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

even bajaj looks better than those

but i still want an old cushman at least its american made and parts are very easy to find

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

On the topic of wildfire mopeds,,, Do you need pedals in philly? I live about 45-55 minutes from Steubenville OH(Wildfire)....I have a dealer that is less than 1/4 a mile away and 4 more within 20 miles... There stuff is just OK....Nothing great, not real good.,just OK.... Even with all the access I have to Wildfire products I just dont feel right on them, all the stuff I test drove, including 4 wheelers, scooters, "moped" and even the truck,, just feels cheap and "tinny"...

It reminds me when my father, back in 1986, was shopping for a car years ago and I went along with him. We test drove Chryslers Semi luxury car the Fifth avenue, (rear wheel drive), and the test drove Chevys caprice classic...... What a huge difference for two cars that were similarly priced and had the same target market....The Chevy just felt better all the way around. The Chrysler was OK but, just felt "tinny".

Not to rain on your parade, I hope your happy with your pedaless moped but I just think they are lacking something........

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

reminds me of those Daihatstu trucks. they are small off highway utility trucks. KyKingdom has a few fourwheeled ones.

I'll have to let you know about the wildfire moped. I ordered trhe 110cc model, with out pedels, The lack of pedels is no problem in NC it still qualifies as a moped. the 110cc engine would make it a motorcycle, but I'm doubting anyone will notice or care. If they do I always have the option of registering it.

I did some research on these "Jialing" type M mopeds.

I heard the haters, and the owners. It seems most of the haters hate them with out ever owning or driving one. I talked to 5 owners and everyone of them said they have stood up to time and miles.

I really wanted a new Tomos, but the local dealer wanted $1800 + for a TTLX thats just crazy. I have 3 used mopeds, and I'm only selling two to help pay for the Wildfire. So I guess if its a total dud, I can sell it on E-bay, and reinvest on yet another used moped.

As for the truck being flimsy. I wouldn't doubt it. its $4000, and only weighs 700 pounds.

The big question I have is will it last 25000 miles... Thats my break away point for a cheap auto. I've actually owned close to 20 cars in the last 18 years. (including parts cars.)

And I've never paid more then $1400 for one. I usually fix what needs to be fixed, and drive them until a major problem comes up. Then its on to the next one. This little truck would be sort of the same. I'll commute with it until 25000 miles and then sell it.

You drove one? what else did you think of it? other then feeling cheap, what were your impressions?

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

I agree with you completely about not needing all the bells and whistles. My TDI jetta gets 46 - 52 mpg (depending on my need for speed). Imagine what it could do without 400 pounds of power everything and other mandated items. It could have greater performance, or the same performance with an even thriftier engine. By the way, that's a sharp Trac in your profile.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

There's a dealership here that sells something like those. Little electric three wheeled cars and mini pickups.

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

Driving it is louder than I like, weird handling characteristics( _reminds me of a chopper that has the wrong trailing center_ )

You get in it and find yourself beating it to death just to make it perform as good as, say a Chevy Luv 4cyl with an auto. or an automatic non-turbo diesel rabbit

I would not consider this a practical everyday vehicle at all, kinda like mopeds,,, you want them to work for you but with inclement weather and their finicky nature its causes problems...Actually the mopeds are more practical than the truck would be...

Just not for me...

Re: OT Not a Moped, but Kinda A Mocar? what do sa

yep they are selling them on rt1 in NH little ZAP electric 3 wheel pick ups but they are like $12000
