So im hearing that the tomos injection is pretty shitty. So Im guessing i should just ignore the injection part and premix the oil and gas together (50:1)??
Thanks

is this a trap?
No. Im just trying to get some info.
I've had no problem at 10,000 miles .. Targa LX A35 engine .. except I had to replace a $3 'clutch' which was still working but getting worn. There is some concern among some posters here on the forum about the A55 rubber clutch giving out at 500 miles but that seems to be speculation at this point. Personally, I believe the problem almost everyone is having with injection is forgetting to refill their oil tank. That's my opinion based on the pump just being too simple to break down, Tomos engineering and craftsmanship being superior, and the pump is pumping oil which keeps the pump well lubricated. But if you do switch to oil mixed gas the mixture is definitely 50:1 for the A35 according to Tomos' literature, and more s unnecessary and may cause you carbon build up, exhaust plugging, etc as well as unnecessary pollution.
Follow Matt's instructions here . Then premix.
Whew! Jerry came back _just_ in time!
Jerry will be here soon. He has had a write up on the total removal. Follow his directions. Some people swear by the injection system and some swear at it! lol
But what do you guys THINK about the oil injection system?
One thing about premixing if you decide to do it, there's more opportunity to get dirt in your gas, so you'll probably have to clean your fuel filters more often.
What oil injection pump?
I removed mine for two reasons. one, because everyone here was downing them, two, my pump was gritty feeling when I turned it while I did my initial inspections. I figured I could premix, so it wasn't much of an issue. Although, it would be nice to just fill up the tank and go, but then again I gained a nice under the seat tool box.
I think it will break and screw up your moped, and even if it doesn't, I will make fun of you for still having it on there. Disable, remove and premix.
Vanessa, the Tomos oil injection really is a piece of junk, and should be removed. I am a professional mechanic, and Tomos owner and rider, and know what I'm talking about. I had 2 total failures on 2 brand new mopeds, made 2 years apart. I have examined this system in great detail. It is Junk. Tomos does make great mopeds, and I highly recommend them. And I agree that it doesn't seem to make sense they would build such a great moped, and put such a crappy system on them, but they do. Some people have had them last for many thousands of miles, but they are the rare exception. I know that premixing seems to be a hassle for some people ( my sister refuses to ride a moped because she refuses to touch gas or oil ). I spend all day every day soaked in it. There is no more danger of getting dirt in your fuel if you premix than if you use the oil injection system, and if you should get dirt in your fuel, all it will do is plug up the filter. Dirt in the oil injection system on the other hand will plug up your injector, and prevent your engine from getting oil, while it is still getting gas, so it keeps running without oil. But not for long. And repairing an engine that seized due to a lack of oil can be expensive. If you premix, you know that if your engine is running, it has oil. And I do recommend premixing at 40:1, regardless of what the manual says. I have an '03 ST that I have put over 14,000 trouble free miles on, it is on it's second plug, and I have cleaned the pipe once. Both were done as preventitive maintenance more than any real need, the pipe was very clean when I removed it, and the plug was fine, but I had another one, so I replaced it. So 40:1 does NOT foul plugs, and plug up exhausts. I wouldn't go much below that however. I have used everything from weedeater oil to top of the line synthetic, with no noticable difference. Remember that in a 2 stroke engine, all the oil that you mix with the gas either gets burned, or comes out the exhaust as liquid oil, so you are putting new oil in everytime you put in gas, unlike a 4 stroke, where you have oil in the crankcase, and it has to be changed. Synthetics tend to last longer in a 4 stroke,( they don't breakdown and lose their viscosity as fast) I doubt there is any real difference in a 2 stroke. My 14,000 mile Tomos still has the compression of a new engine. A stock moped engine is not highly stressed, and will last a long time if properly cared for. Peace. Jerry.
targaped - this is not some recent observation that people on this board have made. It has been known for many years that these pumps break down and if you search the history on this board there are MORE than enough cases of this happening to be a legitimate fear. It's not just a few people who "heard it happened once" and now tell people to take them off.
Thanks dude. Peace. Jerry.
I didn't realise how much I missed Jerry until now.
Yep, its really Jerry.
just mix in your tank, then you won't have to worry about dirt!
At a boy Dean, as he gets his stir stick out!
I serisouly do think of Jerry every time I have to mix in the tank...
Sometimes I even double check to make sure he's not watching.
Yeah...I bet they all just forgot to put oil in the oil tank, targaped...cause that sounds like something a lot of the people on here would do.
You know .. I know of only one moped that the rider burned the engine with .. and he forgot to put oil in .. and I have no problem with my injector, so my personal real life experience creates my view.
So what's the point of talking about it on the internet, if everyone's experience is invalid unless you personally saw it?
Seriously man... It's because it's such a simple little thing, with no failsafes, that it should not be used.
You can have carb/fuel/electrical problems, and you'll find out about them, and be able to fix them. If your oil pump fails, your warning is an engine siesure, which is most often results in the death of the ped.
Tomos makes them.
As a collective, we have way more riding hours in on these than the dudes designing them, so when you get an overwhelming answer from the Moped Army, it's as good as fact. Still subject to intelligent speculation, but really, this isn't something to argue.
Every part of the bike will eventually fail, and this pump does, it junks the bike.
Grahwaflaoivoaiujlkealkrj....
and "when" this pump does*
my brother nearly seized his targa when his oil injection failed, and to boot he was just about to take it off. Luckily there was no damage, but the system is by no means a selling point. Besides, with the pre-a55 motors, you get extra storage space under your seat!
I feel like there's a real mob mentality going on here about the oil injection system. Personally I'm not really buying into it yet and will probably keep it on and just keep an eye on it since checking on it isn't much trouble at all. The only reason I'm tempted to remove it is so that I could have storage under the seat though, because that would be real nice...
i never owned or worked on a tomos who makes the oil pump on them
everybody says the puch oil injections fail but i dont see how since its the same bullet proof mikuni pump they used for years on FA50s QT50s and earlier expresses and on my carabela it has basicly the same pump but different mounting
im guessing the tomos doesnt have a mikuni pump on it
wether you get one of the few pumps that works or not are you willing to risk siezing and having to push your ped out of the middle of nowhere when it does.
nope probably th fa 50 ones are good so its probable just a design flaw on a few of them, the new ones probably are good. but IF U PUT A KIT ON U WANT TO PREMIX, or else u will blow your engine/ seize it. also if your oil lines tangle u r screwed. that being said i will leave the oil injection on my fa 50 cuz its easy to leave on
i had my oil injection on my 07 targa lx and it decided to clog up. $220 later i was back riding. burnt out the bearings and bent my crankshaft. now i took my oil injection off and just run premix and now i got a nice tool kit where my oil injection used to be.
the one on my express sr is perfect
mikuni carbs and pumps dont fail
