Ped Culture/Laws in The UK

vivaknievel /

Hello,

Someone here was asking about California ped laws, which intrigued me, since I currently live in Los Angeles. However, I've been thinking that I may possibly move to the UK in the next year or two... maybe London. Not sure exactly. Very curious about what pedding is like there. I imagine that it's much more common over there, than it is here, given that many manufacturers are there, and the towns seem much more ped-friendly.

What's the registration/license process like there?

Easy to get them used?

Expensive? Fair-priced?

Any special laws?

Realistic/better to have moped as primary form of transportation?

Any other things that might be different than in the U.S. or elsewhere?

Any UK brethren/sisteren out there with some thoughts? Anyone in the U.S. who had some pedding experiences overseas?

Re: Ped Culture/Laws in The UK

viva, just from checking boards and classifieds, I have seen people selling mopes at much higher prices than in the U.S. or Canada. But I could be mistaken. They seem to be so commonplace in continental Europe, though, that it would pay to get one in Amsterdam, Rome or Paris and ship it to the UK (you might even be able to take it on the Channel ferries). For London a mope would be a boon, as the traffic is so-o-o bad there., And it would be great out in the countryside. I don't know the laws, but I believe it needs to be registered and licensed. My old PC50 and my Batavus, which were made for the UK market had those curved black metal strips on the front fender for the license sticker numbers.

Re: Ped Culture/Laws in The UK

...seeing that the u.s. looks at moped's as "toys", they are pretty cheap here. most "developing" country's (and europe, see mopeds as truly practical transpo., and they are, there) , so they carry a higher price tag. ...brazil....peds are king, 1700 "real" (heize) =563.847 u.s.d. ....spendy really, when you can buy a good ped (in the states) for 250 u.s.d. and up.....but bribe'n', the coustoms "agent" may be about the same as buying a 02' gsxr 1100, in pounds...and in london no less baby!!!.....u will pay.....either way.....

Why is it, whenever we have a female on this forum, she's either fixing her husband's moped, or she's about to move away?

Boy, that really ticks me off.

Fellas...

Thanks a lot for the good info. Those are definitely the kinds of things I was curious about.

And no worries David F... any moped I fix will be my own and if I do move overseas, it would probably be like a year or two away and probably temporary... and last, but not least... I love it here in The MA - that wouldn't be very kind of me to up and desert my fellow Pedding soldiers, now would it? I would check in regularly. So don't worry, The Moped Army will get a shot of estrogen every once in a while from the likes of me, guaranteed. haha I think there's some other gals pedding around here somewhere too. We can't let you boys have all the fun, no?

I've seen a few women here in Los Angeles. There will be one more, when I finally get my hands on another bike!
