Vespa ciao starting but not staying on

My 71 Ciao is having issues staying on/idle. when i kick it over on the stand, it starts, runs ok for about 5 seconds and then starts to die. (this is with the choke off, it doesn’t even start with it on.) when i try riding it, it gives me good power for a second then loses it all entirely. is this something to do with jets? thank you

Re: Vespa ciao starting but not staying on

Remove and clean dellorto carb, fresh premix n plug.

Re: Vespa ciao starting but not staying on

Don’t forget to really douche the idle jet too.

If that doesn’t do it check your intake shim maybe replace and then start hunting for other air leaks if that doesn’t do it.

Fred’s guide in the wiki is a great place to trouble shoot

Douche the idle jet? I have no idea what that means

You raised a googleable question :

Re: Vespa ciao starting but not staying on

Take a can of carb cleaner (with a straw) and spray it directly into the idle jet

Repeat until it sprays back through the atomizer at full flow

You may want to remove the float bowl too and clean that really nice.

Or something of that nature- but make sure it flows freely through there, If you use carb cleaner you’ll know when it flows freely and if you’re not sure, keep going.

The idle jet is visible in this post HERE
