Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

So, in the past, I've just filled the gas tank and parked the moped in the garage for the winter. I took the suggestion from another post and grabbed the Puch Maxi manual, which is really helpful. In there, there's a section for winter storage that says:

"remove the sparkplug and fill the cylinder with 30 cc of motor oil and screw back in the sparkplug"

I would assume this is to help prevent the piston from seizing. Do others do this? Wondered how important this is for 3-4 months of garage storage?

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

I got Tomos, but I’ve never done this. Just fill up the gas tank all the way and start the bike once a month for 15 to 20 minutes.

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

Enough oil in the cylinder already.

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

that's real dumb and why wouldnt it just wind up filling the pipe or case anyway

no. dont do that. I mean maybe you would run through a slug of oil if you wanna overcoat everything or something? I've had great success with just ignoring any sort of preparation and just leaving it as-is for months.

haha... Ok, thanks guys for the feedback. I thought that was a bit crazy of an entry in the manual, just wanted to confirm!

Them Austrians and their maintenance antics.

they make fogging oil for this reason. remove plug, get piston to bdc, blast with fogger oil crap

I worked in an outboard shop and when I winterized the 40 plus engines from 2 to 25hp after I changed all the oils, tuned up and made sure they ran well I would always run Lucas upper cylinder lube, Startron stabilizer in the tanks they came in and always blasted Fogg oil in them until they started to bog out and toss them on the storage rack. This is just what a factory trained tech would do I guess? In the spring just toss em back in the tank and run until the oil was gone and give back to the customer.

Ya I did similar winterizer stuffs to larger 2 to 8 cylinder outboard motorboats at a marina with fog oil, stabilizer etc and at a farm to snowmobiles and snow plowing equipment.

So fogging, gas stabilizer ect. is good for long periods of time, most 2 stroke premix oil has some stabilizer in it so it’s good for shorter times of not use.

I hadn’t heard of fogging oil before, looked it up, that makes sense. Sounds like a good option if I’m worried about it, or could try and run it every now and then during a warmer winter day.

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

I just spray extra oil down the carb on the last run and fog the crap outta em

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

You don't need to do that, fogging oil if it is going to sit a long time will not hurt, don't go overboard. What I have found to be the best to ensure spring start up is to fill the tank with stabilized pre-mix, not as necessary if you have non-ethanol fuel, CLOSE PETCOCK, and run the engine until it quits, then try and start it until it will no longer even pop. Been doing this since well, forever, and have never had a moped fail to start in the spring.

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

I don’t winterize any of my peds/cars/lawnmowers/etc, I just make sure to start and run them periodically throughout the winter and I’ve never had a problem. If you’re going to park a vehicle for a long duration, like a year or more then I would properly prepare them to sit in that case.

That’s a good thought Stephen. I run my other small engines with the fuel line off till dry so why not the moped too. Definitely was going to keep the fuel topped off for winter. I use the amsoil Sabre, so it says it has stabilizers in there which should be good.

Re: Winter storage - filling cylinder with oil

I agree with most here that extra oil is not needed, but purging the system after you clock the fuel valve is really great advice. But yeah just start it every few weeks in the shop, smells nice anyway. Just don’t smell it too much or you might get sleepy (or crack the garage door)

It takes a very long time and water to make a piston get stuck from just sitting.

A few months for winter aint nothing, good fresh gas to fill the tank, purge system and start it every now and again.
