50V spark plug cap?

I have a 1978 motorbecane 50V that is just about all there. I picked it up yesterday and the first task is to check for spark. However, the wire coming from the coil just dead ends with no spark plug cap. I did a search of the Internet and found a part number of 23478. Then I went to treatland and tried searching for the part number, no success. And then tried searching for “spark plug cap“, again no success.

Now I’m wondering if I can just go to the hardware store and get a spark plug cap that will fit the correct spark plug type (I have the spark plug type written down but I don’t have it in front of me right now).

So I guess my question is, “is there anything special about the motorbecane plug cap or is it just a regular plug cap that needs to fit the plug and the wire from the coil?”

Re: 50V spark plug cap?

It’s nothing special but the smaller the better because of the limited amount of room. You can just hold the plug wire close to the head with someone pedaling to check for spark. Wear a glove because it might bite you.

Re: 50V spark plug cap?

I'd just go with something like the common NGK LB05EP.

Re: 50V spark plug cap?

Yes it's made for the uncommon 5mm instead of 6mm wire!

The best way to fix imo is put a standard sized coil on it, but if your existing coil is good you can just wrap electrical tape around the 5mm wire until it's a snug fit into the screw on boot. The screw into the metal wire core is holding it on mechanically so the tape is mostly just centering it and sealing it up.

LZFH is the special small one that's a good fit for mbk.

🦺🥇b to the MOPO 🚨🚨🚨 eff /

The best fix is to replace the ignition with a le partie CDI, and use a standard cap. :-P

Re: 50V spark plug cap?

Couple of tips to follow up on the good ones above. Stens brand copper core spark plug wire for lawn equipment is the same diameter as original Moby. Lawn equipment repair shops have a lot of good stuff for mopeds. If you need to make 5mm wire fit in a coil with the larger opening, try heat shrink and layer it.
