Scorpion '78

I've been searching for a suitable first-moped for a while now and just found this Scorpion '78 SC2 on CL for $800. The frame seems to be in good condition, it was recently tuned up, and I've been told it runs well.

What are y'all's thoughts? I'm unfamiliar with the Scorpions, so I'm hesitant to commit. Is it worth $800?

Good Moped to start with. From the photos, this one has a Morini MO2 two speed automatic which are a pretty solid engine. If it's running I would definitely get a test ride on it to make sure things are working properly. Prices can range across the market and location. I would say if it really running good, it could be worth it. Otherwise you can always negotiate. Worse they can say is no. :D

Re: Scorpion '78

Thanks for the opinion -- sadly I think the seller is firm on price -- he has two identical Scorpion '78s and he's willing to cut a deal on selling them together, but I've only got the cash for one.

I guess then it would be up to you whether you are wanting it and willing to pay that price. I can tell you a paid $500 for a not running bike that needed a lot of work but I really wanted it and was willing to cross the country to pick it up. I am of course bias for Morini bikes since all my bikes run Morini engines. :D

Re: Scorpion '78

Super nice scorpion. I don't see many of those at all. Maybe a touch high for your area, but if you have the cash, grab it. They are pretty easy to work on and offer a good amount of replacement and upgrade parts as needed.

Re: Scorpion '78

Not familiar with the Scorpion, but if it is in good condition, and does not have some design issue that makes it unreliable or impossible to get parts for, I'd go for it. Decent mopeds aren't cheap anymore, and never will be again. With the exception of Tomos, most of them haven't been made in 40 years. Many were butchered up and many just rusted away. They are relics from another (and IMO better) time and will only get more expensive as time goes by and the supply dwindles even more.

Re: Scorpion '78

Transmission parts are very hard to come by for the FM MO2 motor, particularly the starter clutch bits. Make sure the starter clutch functions as it should or you will be wishing you had purchased a different moped,

My 1st moped was a Scorpion, it was cobbled together. Engine from Italy, tail light from England , I think it had ties too Norton motorcycle factory. Also assembled in Crosby MN. I'm sure there is other people on MA that know more than I do , but if I remember it was a solid good 1st bike for me.
