"Barn find" 82 FA50

Hello all,

I just picked up an FA50 from a local auction and brought it home this weekend. I haven't spent much time going through it yet because I am in the middle of an engine swap on my diesel Mercedes wagon.

I have started looking for parts that I know I will need when it comes time and I have a few questions for the experts.

How does a FZ50 compare to the FA50? Are there many common parts? In particular, would a FZ wiring harness work on a FA without too many modifications?

Are the brake lever/switch assemblies that they sell on Treatland worth a darn?

Does anyone know of an original style seat cover that has the Suzuki on the back?

I've enjoyed reading through a lot of posts on here already and really appreciate the cumulative knowledge of the Army.

Cheers

Nice score. Replacement seat pleather is available from multiple sellers on EBay. Mine came from Florida and looks great after careful stretching. Yes, it has the silkscreen badging on the back. The underside has a stiffened edge that tucks into several cleats around the plastic base. I found a spatula worked well for snapping it in.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Would anyone happen to have a FA50 kickstart spring guide that they'd be willing to part with? They seem to be unobtanium anymore.

You done good . ;)

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Thank you everyone, I got one ordered. Lots of other parts coming my way as well so I'll begin work soon.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

So I have almost everything disassembled. The crankcase had a ton of rusty dirt in it but so far it seems to be superficial. Here are a few pics of what I've found.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

My current thought is to take the crank to a shop where they can press the conn rod out, clean up everything, put a new big end bearing on and press it back together. There isn't any pitting or scoring on the crank so it seems to me like that would work.

As far as the crankcase, I'm planning to pull all the bearings and take it (along with all the other nasty part) to the machine shop to have them hot tank everything. Then I can put new bearings in and slap stuff back together.

Does this all sound reasonable?

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

There is only the thinnest amount of friction material left on the clutch.

I need to replace the clutch but it looks like the bell is ok.

The bell looks like it has been pretty hot and is discolored but I'm not sure if this is a normal thing.

Any thoughts or advice based on these pictures would be greatly appreciated!

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I'm getting there with my Shuttle. I have replaced SO many parts and my current holdup is getting spark. After discovering I wasn't, I tested all electrical components per the FSM and the CDI and coil both tested bad. I have parts coming from eBay and I hope to get them swapped out in the next few days.

I do have a question on jetting...this is my setup.

60cc kit and stock clone carb from Treats

MLM next level stock pipe

no porting

stock intake and reeds

Does an 82 main jet sound like the right size for this? That gives me a 6% increase. I will get some pics up soon to show where I'm at.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

You really need a selection of jets and a temp gauge to help dial it in. I have a QT50 with a 60cc top end and I have a 90 main in mine right now but I’m still tuning on it. I started with a 100 main. Outside temp and elevation can also have an affect on jetting. Trial and error will help you tune it.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I got my used CDI and coil and now I have good spark but I still can't get it to start or run. These are the things I have checked:

Timing- the mark on the stator and the flywheel both line up perfectly with the mark on the case at TDC. I haven't hooked up a timing light but I think this should be a good starting point. Removed both coils on the stator, cleaned the mounting surfaces, and used a little dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion.

Fuel supply- I'm getting good flow through the petcock and can see the fuel moving when I go to Prime to fill the bowl. All of the fuel supply lines are new.

Air- I have the stock air filter setup with all new parts. There is no change with filter installed or removed.

Compression- I have a new 60cc kit from treats. Ring gap and orientation are good, head and cylinder gaskets are new, head nuts are torqued to 90 inch/lbs. I used my regular automotive compression tester and only got 40 psi, but it has a 14 inch rubber hose so I don't think that really tells me anything.

Spark plug- It is sparking and I occasionally get a pop when I'm kicking it. It is a new NGK BP4H plug with FSM gap. It smells of fuel when I pull it out but doesn't have any obvious signs of combustion going on.

Carb- New 12mm clone carb from treats. I disassembled and cleaned out a few flakes of metal that were in there. Set float height to spec and installed a new 82 main jet and 20 idle jet. Also set the mixture screw to 1.75 turns out per the book. Throttle and choke both operate smoothly.

Crankcase- I got a new conn rod and bearings pressed on and have new viton crank bearing seals (along with all the other seals on the bike). I sealed the 2 halves of the crankcase with HondaBond.

Exhaust- New MLM next level stock pipe with new gasket.

Intake- I looked at the reeds and they seem to be working as they should. As far as I can tell they close tightly and don't have any chips or anything. The molded rubber gasket where the intake joins to the crankcase looks fine. Should this have sealant?

I tried squirting some fuel into the spark plug hole and then cranking but it still didn't fire at all. I've been through Fred's guide several times and I think I have considered all of the options. I really don't know where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Alex

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Compression seems low . Are you holding the throttle wide open while testing ?

Test the tester on a known good motor to see if the gauge is still good .

You might consider renting a tester from an auto parts store ( loan a tool program ) and seeing if you get a different reading .

The hose isn't going to make a big difference , a pound or two , maybe . Mine only went screwy after the hose got bad enough to not hold air pressure . Removed the hose and back to reading good again . (edited)

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Is there a Schrader valve at the end that goes in the spark plug hole?

Mine has one with a long hose and I get perfect compression readings of 145 on my QT50.

With the pipe and kit I'm saying your jetting needs to be richer.

I was surprised with how much bigger my main needed to be.

I have jets from 70 to 130. 70 was stock and now I'm at 115.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I got a different new compression tester that has a schrader valve in the tip. With the throttle wide open I'm only building 95 psi.

I've got new head, cylinder, piston, rings and gaskets. Ring gap is well within spec. Head is torqued per the manual. Rings lined up on the pins as they should be.

What else can affect compression? Could an issue with the reeds or intake cause problems?

This thing is kicking my butt so I sure could use some advice. Thanks!

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I got it running. When I was installing the stator there was a notch in the edge near one of the screw holes so I used it as the point to put next to the timing marks. Timing seemed screwy though so I took the stator back off and searched for other marks. Ended up finding the proper mark under one of the screws...I couldn't see it before due to surface corrosion. I installed it properly and she started on the first kick!

Here's how she looks after getting everything back together

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Lookin' good .

Just needs an oil pump cover ...

COVER, OIL PUMP 11411-02301

Likely won't find one at any dealer .

Maybe someone parting a bike ???

There's one on ebay for a real stupid price of $95 + $15 shipping . OEM cost is / was around 10 bucks .

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

That’s great. Glad to hear that you got it running. Looking good.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Thanks PD and Ron. My next step is tuning. I have a new 60cc kit, MLM next level stock pipe and stock clone carb. Float height is set per the manual, needle is in the middle notch and the idle jet is a 20. These are my results so far:

82 main jet - top speed 25 gps, at top end seemed to be running out of fuel or missing, or something?

110 main jet - total dog with any throttle setting, lots of smoke, 4-stroking?, top speed maybe 10

90 main jet - top speed 27 gps, pulls well at 3/4 throttle and below but completely falls on it's face with WOT at any speed. It feels like it is missing or possibly 4-stroking. WOT gives top speed of 22, gets faster and smooths out when I roll off a bit.

I sprayed all over the place with carb cleaner looking for air leaks and can't find any. I haven't checked the timing but it has a CDI so I'm not sure how important that is.

I'm going to take the foam element out of the air cleaner and see if that changes anything. If it gets better I will go leaner on the main.

I'm not sure how to decide if I need to move the needle up/richer or down/leaner or leave it alone. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks!

Alex

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

Just try the clip one way . If it runs worse , you know to go the other way .

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

With what you described, it sounds like you are still to rich on the main jet. Do you have a temp gauge? If not, I would suggest getting one. It will help you tremendously with tuning or at the very least, not soft seizing.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I removed the air filter foam and it allowed maybe a tiny bit more throttle before the four stroking starts. Since leaning the mixture a little bit seemed to help my next step will be to move down from a 100 to an 88 main jet.

Does the needle affect the last little bit of throttle travel? If so, maybe I should lean it a bit also?

I'm looking at a temp gauge that loops around the spark plug

Amazon Temp/Tach

Does this look like a good one for tuning?

Cheers

Alex

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

I don’t know about that gauge, I use a Trailtech. I just looked and they have shot up in price like everything else. Used to be $40.

Re: "Barn find" 82 FA50

What temps should I see at the spark plug with extended WOT runs? What about RPM?

I'm currently getting 335 F and 12,900 RPM as the peak numbers. It still loses power and stumbles with too much throttle but I'm able to get up to mid-20s on the GPS.

Does that temp indicate that I'm running lean?

Thanks!

Alex
