VT transferable registration conundrum…..

I posted the below reply in response to another thread, but I don’t think my issue will get enough exposure, so I’m cutting and pasting it here. What do you guys think?

BTW.., I haven’t spoken to the buyer. I’m just relaying what he told my son.

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

He should get his own vt reg.

From what he communicated to my son, I don’t think he will go that route. He wants a NJ title.

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

Tell him to try another dmv. What did you sell him Larry?

That's why you always put the registration in your own name, then they have to treat it like you moved there from outta state

I’ve sold other bikes with VT transferable regs and it’s never been a problem before.

DMV clerks are idiot's, I've been denied and just walked back in to a different clerk and got my plate no problem.

I agree. I think this guy is panicky.

Best results are go first thing in the morning and dont make eye contact with the clerk.

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

Yeah, he should try a third party DMV service place. They are always more helpful and lenient on my experience. It was super easy to register some mopeds. I never even needed the bill of sale as long as the vin numbers were not in their system as owned by another party.

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

+1 on trying another clerk or DMV. It costs nothing but some time.

I vaguely remember you selling that rebel a while back and he's just now trying to do the paper work after you have moved? If thats the case then he can share some if not all of the burden. (edited)

Agreed...

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

Unless you had anything to do with that nay-saying DMV clerk not getting any the night before or you have any control over the money grabbers at the state level , seems to me that if , when you sold the bike to him , everything was legal , it's not your responsibility to do anything more .

Maybe make up a Bill of Sale , back dated , but you likely did that then . ;)

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

I just got my application back from VT for my bakersdozen bike. Thought it got shot down for some legal reason and I was sad.

Turns out, I’m just a dumbass that forgot to sign the bottom line 🤦🏻. It’s back in the mail now.

I agree, if you sold it without a title, the new owner knew what they were buying and it should be completely up to them to fix it. I know you’re an awesome person and trying to help out, but seems like you made an honest effort and it’s really up to the new owner to find a way now.

I always register my new stuff right away if its a running bike or boat, just to be sure it will fly. For used stuff, it's the buyers duty to be sure that what the seller offers up is good enough to pass their DMV litmus test.

There is no third party dmv service in NJ. It’s all handled by the NJ state dmv office.

The buyer said he went to Florida to take care of his parents who had Covid. That’s why he is only getting to it now.

I gave him a legit VT transferable registration. Not much more I can do on my end other than to refund him his money. Than I’d be out $1600 plus the bike.

Thanks. Now let’s hope the buyer sees it that way. (edited)

I wouldn't give him any money without him returning the bike and any associated paperwork .

yup. he should have immediately switched it to his own name. its probably expired now and setting off flags in the NJ DMV system.

^ Agreed.

Since the guy brought your bike, the value has probably gone up 25%. When spring hits, new inventory will be scarce. The guy should feel lucky for what he has and find a way to get it plated.

There is a CT DMV rule I came across that states that if the reg has expired, it has to be revalidated in the state of issue. That's a real PITA.

I didn’t renew the VT registration because I sold it.

Holy cow, this 100%.

I know it's a pain but you could drive up there, hand him 1600 cash come home with the bike title it in Virginia and probably sell it for $2,500 right now. If I was retired it would be a halfway decent use of my time.

Ive dealt with this kind of thing from buyers before, they think giving you 600 bucks for a rusty old moped entitles them to be treated the way they would at a Mercedes dealer. I would tell him you sold it as is and it's a legal title, if the great state of NJ cant honor reciprocity that's between him and them. Texas tried to pull that shit on me and I just ran everything with a VT plate even I lived there.

"As is, where is"

Unless you made a particular promise regarding the registration, the ball is in his court.

Very fair price for that bike!

^ agreeded

Re: VT transferable registration conundrum…..

Offer to buy it back at original price. Sell it for $2000 or more. Look at the gas prices and question me.

I agree with you 100%, but the problem with this course of action is that I have no way of getting it back to Virginia or else I would take it back. Plus, I have no where to keep it. My garage is full. (edited)

I made absolutely no money on that bike. With the VT registration fees, I probably lost money.
