Sachs 505 no spark help

Ok so I just got an old Sachs suburban for $80 I’m trying to figure out why I’m not getting spark. I have been able to get very week spark from it but nothing consistent. Is there a way I can check my ignition coil with a multimeter or something? I have no clue what reading I should be getting or what I’m doing to be honest. Any help would be appreciated. I’ve cleaned the contacts and am wondering if the boot is just bad or my plug is bad.

Change your condensor

Re: Sachs 505 no spark help

Puch E50 ignition is compatible with the stock Sachs 505 ignition. You will have to set the flywheel-to-crank position like you would with an aftermarket "no key" flywheel.

Re: Sachs 505 no spark help

Sachs are rubber mounted engines so make sure there is a good frame ground tying the engine to the frame. Use a DMM to measure the coil resistance, should be about 3.5 ohms.

Second most likely culprit is the points, I always replace them when I get a new bike with genuine Bosch. If your spark is weak you might try cleaning them with some 600 grit sandpaper

Third, the condenser as mentioned. If you are cranking the bike in the dark you can see the points arcing if you have a bad condenser. If the points are arcing there is a good chance they got reckt.

Re: Sachs 505 no spark help

It’s probably the points as has already been said. I would first adjust them to the proper gap using a feeler gauge. If that doesn’t work then replace them. The condensers can go too but generally the points are the culprit.

I like to clean and reuse original points if possible, the reproduction ones dont hold up as well. Condensers degrade with age. Best to replace it, even if you do get spark from cleaning the points. An external mounted condenser is the way to go. Easy to change if you suspect it is failing, which they do.

^^this^^

look, this condensor would work: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/carquest-premium-ignition-condenser-gaa1038/12417072-P

or if ya dont know what you're doing, this is a decent option for a stock-ish Sachs 505 that will fit inside your stock flywheel: https://www.treatland.tv/puch-E50-ZA50-points-stator-plate-p/puch-e50-stator-plate.htm

Im just throwing ideas at you. really though, start with this moped troubleshooting manual so we can know what the real problem is and do a better job helping you: https://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Fred%27s_Guide (edited)

You will need a flywheel puller access the ignition, treats should have one.

Re: Sachs 505 no spark help

Yeah I have to order a puller. I cleaned the points and I got a bit of spark but not frequent enough to do anything with. Might just order the whole assembly and call it a day.
