Dead Sealed Beam Recommissioned ...

The OEM sealed beam headlight on my FA50 finally gave up it's ghost after 37 years of faithful service .

There are still some available , but , at a pretty price .

So , being as resourceful as possible , I found a halogen bulb that happens to fit into the OEM housing after removing the original bulb .

Removing the original bulb requires a propane torch and destroying the bulb .

I torched the bulb base where it meets the reflector in order to de-solder it from the reflector .

I squeezed the bulb base with a pliers . That kind of folds the base and separates it from the bulb glass globe .

Removed the base and reached inside the reflector with a pliers handle to crush the old bulb globe into small enough pieces that would fit through the bulb base hole .

After clearing the reflector of debris I toke the outer finish from around the hole so solder would have a decent hold .

The new halogen bulb has only a pair of contact nubs and needed the original bulbs wires soldered on .

That done , I inserted the new bulb into the reflector and soldered the new bulb base tab to the reflector after being bent to conform .

Installed back in the bike , it works perfectly .

The OEM sealed beam is/was 6 volt , 20/20 watt .The new halogen bulb is 6 volt 25/25 watt ( Bulb # A3625 ).

I usually go for the turn signal socket bases at o reily’s that use the flat plastic base. The hole left after you remove the bulb is only like 3 mm smaller than the socket so it’s pretty quick to use a little flap wheel or a die grinder to open it up and add a couple notches to make it serviceable.

That's another option . A lot more costly , but ...

yeah the whole package with bulbs is like $20. but a replacement sealed beam is just over $10 and they are actual garbage, most of the time i break the contacts off instaling them. I prefer having serviceable headlights

Re: Dead Sealed Beam Recommissioned ...

As far back as around 2001 or so, on the Expressly Mopeds site, Zippy (Bill Zimmerman) had a mod for the Honda Express sealed beam which allowed him to replace bulbs easily.

I guess all those posts on that forum are lost now.

Yup, this is how I do them too. You can also just silicone rtv the new bulb in place, I've done that before and it works good.

The h10 halogens are like 20 or 30w I think and real small, they have a nice flat base that works great with the rtv method. You need a pretty good stator to run them though.
