Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Hey all, thought I’d put up a thread to show my most recent Puch Magnum build that is admittedly a bit of a skill flex meant to push myself. I’ve been messing with puchs for 20 years now and I wanted to restore one of these the best I could while having access to all the equipment to do it right at my old job. Got this one with a dented tank (fork dents) and ripped seat, but it ran.

Here’s how it was when I got it:

^not too bad at 5 feet but a little crusty for my tastes. With access to a downdraft paint booth and industrial design shop, this all was like a game of process and patience. (Former job as prototyping specialist)

Here’s the tank up close before repairs:

So I borrowed a stud welder to pop the dents before body work and this is what that looks like (studs get welded to tank, then a slide hammer is used to pull the dents carefully):

After the dent pulling came some body work and priming:

Meanwhile, the frame got a custom fork stop for a revival front end and paint (stock one was bent, obviously):

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Then comes the “galaxy” part, I chose to paint this bike with a pearl called “Solis” from Didspade. It required a black base coat and then three coats of a mid coat clear that had the pearl suspended in it, then a clear top coat (or 3). This bike’s paint is as it was straight out of the gun, no wet sand or buff because no haze or orange peel. I’m very proud of this paint job because there were 9 coats and chances to potentially run the paint or somehow screw it up, and I did have to start over on the tank because I ran the pearl on one coat and it shows up like CRAZY. Anyway, fresh out of the booth:

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

So I enlisted a coworker in soft goods development to cover my seat and she did an AMAZING job but it wasn’t cheap.. sure with moped seat dude had been around then but I’m happy w what she did.

The motor build is a polini puch with Bing 15 and treats pipe to maintain the stock side covers and OEM++ aesthetic. Tomos oem disc front, Peugeot adapted rear with custom brake plate. It rides beautifully and while not my fastest bike at all, it’ll move.

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Daaamn. Nicely done!

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

I like the color and the chrome accents.

If I had access to a shop like that, my wife would have to come get me from work. 🤠

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Gorgeous...Is your old place of work hiring? I have five mopeds to finish and I'm very good at maintaining the illusion I'm working while doing my own thing. Kudos on a tastefully done Magnum...

Probably Fred /

Love the revival front end and use of spoke wheels and chain covers that most don’t use on a build.

Your build makes me want to cannibalize my revival for the front end and put it on a magnum

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Very $$$$$ nice TD..that faux Ltd looks familiar. Mike V had one here in Dayton, years ago. It got passed around a bit, and I don’t know whatever happened to it.

This is that one all restored. ^ the za50 from that bike went on the Newport in the first picture and has made it out to SF where it resides. Always ran well and ripped after I put a phva on it.

Thanks Roffman for the compliments. I have a za50 in my collection that came from you. Hope to swap a new top end on it this winter and I’m building some new puchs. Always respected your work, so thanks for the respect for mine.

I’ll be damned...hehe....glad it got the treatment. It’s nice you have access to a shop to transform these beaters.

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Just seen this yesterday. Very nice build. Paint work is amazing!

Re: Puch Magnum “galaxy build” by TD

Forgot to mention I custom painted these oakleys to match my moped. Hater blockers:
