Does anyone know how to get a title from Massachusetts for a moped with no title?
Does anyone know how to get a title from Massachusetts for a moped with no title?
Aren’t you a NH resident? If so, all you need is a bill of sale to get your moped registered.
Just looking for a friend thanks!
I found on mass.gov you don't need a title!
Me too. Only a BOS to register.
Haha you don’t need anything in Massachusetts! I know a lot of cops and they have way better stuff to do!
Trust me!
My mother taught me never to trust anyone who says "Trust me!" But in this case an exception must be made. I have one plate that has been displayed on many a moped for years without incident. And one sticker on a plate when those were the requirement before plates which also travelled from moped to moped on a daily basis for decades. I have never had a problem in Mass and I ride far more than the average person.
^ Lot's of people I know of have done this, but I sure will not, ESPECIALLY in the age of automated tag readers. It's an ugly charge messing with plates, at least in MN, granted most cops have more to do, and if the plate is yours, they will very likely not know a Puch from a Motobecane from a Vespa, but if they do or stop you for something else and sort it out, bad deal. Learned this way back in '82, buddies older brother had a hot dirtbike, it had a plate but way expired, cops chased him home, knocked him off the bike with the cop car, roughed him up a bit to get his attention and read him the riot act, took the plate, said you are better off with no plate than one with stolen tabs on it, said they would not have chased him at all if he didn't have a hot one on there, and this was back when the had to type in a plate or call it in on a radio, they did not charge him, but sure put the fear of the law in him, me too. Plates and titles are cheap, insurance too, just bite the bullet and pay up. It's so worth it being on the up and up.
I'll be your friend.
Stephen,
The "plates" in Mass are not what you think. They do not enter moped registrations in the RMV database here. They used to just have a sticker, but they recently added the plate. They do not consider mopeds more than a "motorized bicycle" in Massachusetts so the regular motor vehicle laws do not apply. MGL 90.1 (Mass moped laws) for example states that the maximum fine for a first offense on a moped is a whopping $25, Cops cannot be bothered. They also have no way of verifying plates from their vehicle laptop. Totally different than States that actually plate mopeds.
Trust me, you don’t need it

Gotcha, I have heard of, and seen on bikes the stickers you were talking about, but when you mentioned a plate I was thinking like what we have here. Many run them with expired tags and don't seem to get stopped....cops really don't care too much, I buy 'em every year, no idea what the fine is, for a car I think it's close to a hundred bucks, and the tabs are like 14 or something...lol, no brainer. No insurance is worse, can be up to an $1,100 fine and loss of license, and I'm told as bad on your driving record as a dwi, all for not paying $76.00 a year per bike. We are kind of uptight here re: mopeds compared to other states. :)
There’s no title in MA, you just need a bill of sale, your MA driver’s license and $40. They give you a plate for the back that has the date it expires on a sticker and a registration.
Been harassed a lot by cops in my small town, mostly because I’m an asshole and they knew me before but, yeah get a sticker at least and try not to go more than like 45-50 and you will never be bothered.
