N + 1 Is The Right Number

A new to me 78 Jawa Babetta that I found by word of mouth. It has been sitting in a shed for 15 years. This will be number five in my collection if anyone's counting. All I have done is air up the tires. The side panels were included but loose. I was told there was no spark but at 150.00 I don't care. Should be a fun winter project...

Re: N + 1 Is The Right Number

No spark on a jawa is almost always caused by a bad thyristor. The thyristor usually cracks from age. (edited)

Thanks! Fortunately the little magic box is available. Have a few age cracks myself...

Re: N + 1 Is The Right Number

you can also build your own thyristor, theres a writeup in the wiki but you'll probably have to source some different parts, since theres no more radioshack. Nonetheless it's a fun easy little science project and holy shit it's like a fuckin ray gun blasting blue lightningbolts when it works. I like that you can buy a thyristor but building one was definitely one of the more interesting and rewarding moped projects I can think of.

I updated most of the links to new ark, but I couldnt find exactly the same thyristor but the listed one or any decent mA scale 3 prong thyristor (SCR) should work.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. There's not much to that thyristor and a hand built air cooled version looks like a better choice. There's only one electronics store left in town and I'll see if they stock the parts. Will keep you guys posted on the progress...

A 250V cap seems pretty dang overkill if the input is only 6V.

Various values were tried by folks in this old thread, seems like a 16V cap is plenty; someone else reports using a 20V cap in this thread.

Speaking of:

I've been super swamped at work lately, but part of that has been getting real familiar with KiCad. So there will be pcbs / kits for these available soonish.

all of the components are easily sourced on ebay and are VERY cheap

Good to know! I'm also very cheap and love saving money. Some say I'm tighter than bark on a tree. I did find a Jawa site in the Czech republic but they only ship to Europe. Thanks for your reply...

Looks like an automobile plate on the back LOL

Would love to have that bike (edited)
