6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

Hello all, I know you get these questions a lot and I am sorry. First I am a tall thin new rider and looking to get a moped that will fit (ish) someone over 6'4. After some research it seems like the Maxi is a pretty solid choice. But Prices are all over and I don't want to over pay. What should my budget be for a bike like this. Also, are these easy bikes to work on, I want to learn how to wrench on the bike also and be able to do most upgrades and repairs myself. Thanks in advance!

Most step through mopeds have a height adjustable seat, obvious exceptions that come to mind are any with a longer/2 person seat, like the Honda Hobbit. The rest of the proportions might be a little tight though. Magnums are suited for taller people but expensive. I have a 2003 Sachs from Europe that is a step through but surprisingly tall, like I can't put both my feet flat on the ground when riding it even though I can touch the ground fine on my cb550.

Price wise, markets vary. But consider that there are $300 stock maxis that pop up all the time all over the country, and that shipping would be around $200 depending on where you are and where the bike is. A Maxi that has new tires, brakes, cables, but stock motor is worth ~$450 all day. A bone stock Maxi with a motor rebuilt by someone competent is worth around $600.

Point is, don't pay a grand for a Maxi. Avoid Tampa Steve, dude has fucked over enough people to warrant not doing business with him, and he doesn't know jack shit about working on bikes

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

i ride a yamaha chappy. i'm 6'4" 205lbs. i look ridiculous, but i don't care.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

I dont.think.you'll find anything that will be comfortable.for long hauls....if you're talking short jogs around town or back roads most any can be adjusted to ride...i'm 6'5" 265 and have ridden several different ones but not actually comfortable and top heavy feel on most

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

Yeah mainly looking for just tooling around town and evening rides around the neighborhood. I am in the Orlando area, so thanks for the heads up on Tampa Steve also! And good to know shipping is not too bad would it be good to post when I have the cash in hand and just say what do you have in the for sale forum? It seems like for short just tooling around rides most bikes can work.

But what ones are easy to find parts for and work on for beginners. I personally would like to learn some of the skills to work on bikes and don't mind putting in the work to learn. (edited)

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

Piaggio Grande, Derbi Variant and DS50, Atalla Master and LL4m, Motomarina Sebring , and Vespino are some of the larger framed mopeds I have had that were pretty comfortable. I am 6'2" and 200ish pounds.

I am sure there are a lot of mopeds that would be equally comfortable. I like having a long seat, helps me get in a comfy position. (I have had some smaller mopeds that wanted to wheelie when you scooted all the way back on a long seat)

Something variated or with extra gears is going to be nice to get you moving and climbing hills.

Lol at anyone under 5’6” tall sharing their opinion here, especially w regards to economic policing. The market is what it is, you’re gonna have to pay to play. You’d be best served with one of these^^ (expensive) but realistically you may want to find a magnum or streetmate. Both will allow you to scoot back on the seat or raise suspension length to change your riding characteristics without totally fkin your chain line up like you might have happen on a maxi w magnum length suspension. (I know because I’ve done it, and I’m 6’1” not 5’4”)

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

How much is expensive, I don't mind spending 1,000 dollars if it meets my needs and allows me to ride Simi comfortable. Also I love the look of the Minarelli V1 what should I pay for one if those in running solid condition? And thanks for the other recommendations also looking at all of them!

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

Probably Fred /

Puch magnum MKII

I paid $1750 very fair dollars for that derbi and it was slow and in need of work to rip, so the idea that you’ll be able to get a good running rebuilt bike w fresh tires, chains, and cables for $600 is laughable. Fwiw I also had to pay $2500 to buy back a magnum I once sold for $1500 when it went well over 60mph. The market is what it is because many people trying to control the price narrative are sitting on hoards of junker bikes they’re ready to throw together as “runners” when you reach out to buy. I am building a couple for sale, neither of which would really suit you as a big guy (one maxi, one mini magnum) but they will be priced around the prices mentioned above, because for anything you’ll want after the first week of riding it, you’ll have to pay. Even the $2500 magnum I bought back I had to rebuild, so look to buy from a reputable shop like Sabatino Mopeds for example, someone who puts together some really nice bikes for the value. (edited)

Awesome thanks for the info, you all have been very helpful with ideas thanks!

You can probably find a running v1 $300-$700

Thanks yeah I'm trying to stay under 1000 unless it's something that just speaks to me :)

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

I've always seen tall dudes ride motobecanes, but I'm 5'7 so everyone's tall to me.

Yeah I'm on the hunt got one of those I like the style :)

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

The v1 motors were fitted on lots of different frames, some bigger but some of them like the Motrons and cimattis and stuff are smaller than average. They also have the short crank arms usually that are really annoying imo. There are some rarer ones like Raven and lem that are big tube frame.

I'm not quite that tall but at 5'11 with a 34"inseam I like a long seat bike that I can stretch out on. The Moby is great, I like the maxis like the sport mk2 with taller bars and seat, but you can configure any maxi with the right add ONS.

The tomos are a little bigger than a puch, that seem to be more common in the Southeast, 2 speed helps get ya moving a bit better. They also had sturdy wheels which is a weak point on a lot of mopeds.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

🇮🇹💦 Of the Loin /

I mean, I put dirtbike forks on a motobecane and threw a V1 on it and I'm 6'5 and thats still kinda a small bike

the geometry just wasn't made like a motorcycle so if you're 6'3" ++ they all fit about as horrible so just get what you want to work on

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

I think the only person who can really speak on this so far is Maitland. He’s a tall dude and rides mopeds.

Wow 6’5” he def knows best, you ain’t lying

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

I’m 6’4”, I have a few Vespa grandes they are comfortable to ride. They are a bit harder to work on since everything is tucked into the subframe but having the cvt transmission is nice for off the line power and climbing hills.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

We are grown men riding 40 year old motorbikes made for teenagers. We're gonna look ridiculous at any height. Embrace the adventure and have lots of fun while doing it.

Expect to pay $500 to $700 plus the cost of the bike to turn a V1 into a kitted, turnkey machine. My V1 bikes over the last 6 years, most of which are Motron, average to around $275, so kitted and turnkey ought to approach the $775 and up mark.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

Yes, I forgot about the Grande. I was going to say a Revival or StreetMate or then the Motomarina Sebring.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

The Grande is pretty comfortable

The highway pegs are dope and the seat is really soft

Oh I don't care about looking silly 😜 I just care about comfort and thanks for all the info I appreciate it!

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

A Moby 50V is the most comfy moped you can get for a reasonable amount of money, but it is French so expect to get a baffled and a bit frustrated when tinkering around with it.

I'll second the recommendation of a Free Spirit, see if you can a silver one for $600-$700 - then convert the rear wheel bearings to sealed units. I'm 6', 2" and they fit me well enough but might be just a little small for you; get creative with repositioning the seat.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

I like all the fuckers commenting that are not 6’4 or taller…. Puch cobra if your a boss and have the cheddar to obtain one. If your cheap just get a tomos targa ttlx, or a Garelli ssxl and chill. Derbi variants are pretty comfy for tall duders. Ya!!

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

^What? Cobra's are tiny? I would recommend a Derbi if you are really tall, or a Streatmate or Revival, bigger frame bikes, Sebring is ok, I'm 5.11 and it fit me ok, the 50v was the most comfortable bike I ever rode, fit me when young and thin, still fit when fat and old, just no dubs any more...lol.

Re: 6'4 and taller riders what do you recommend?

✝️TD-THE MORAL AUTHORITY✝️ ✨ /

^ yea I always forget about mobys, they have nice long frames and a Le Moped would likely really be a good one for the tallest riders. It has such a long seat to stretch out. Best mags and color scheme helps too.
