Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

Stephanie Popper /

So I am new to the moped world. I have been wanting to get one for a while and found this Batavus on Facebook marketplace for around $1000. After some quick research I am starting to get the assumption that that is a high price and I should negotiate. Its fully running and has only around 600 miles, I see there was an upgrade to the seat but still think that is a bit much. I've been so eager for so long I want to impulsively get a bike before It gets to cold at the Jersey Shore.

Any options or advice?

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

Try to negotiate and see what happens

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

Make sure the seller has a clean title for it if you decide to buy it.

The Bronco is a "rarer" model for the US, but either way. $1k for a running bike with title in the Tri-State is fairly standard, if edging on high given it's the end of the season

I think $1k is too much for any batavus, in any condition, in any part of the country. You should post a Want To Buy ad in the buy/sell forum on this site before buying that bike, you may get some better options.

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

it's pretty high but that's a nice looking bike. as a new rider I would buy it, enjoy it, but also i'd continue watching online marketplaces and realize i couldve had a better deal on lots of other bikes. Then inevitably it would break and i'd be forced to reconcile with the fact that this batavus has fewer parts and know-how to draw from. After frustration and challenge it would be repaired, then coupled with my newfound mechanical confidence, maybe i'd get around to feeling like high 20's wasnt fast enough on 40mph roads and then i'd have to deal with the realization that there's very little that can be done from a performance standpoint. Eventually i'd sell it at a small loss, for like 600 bucks, and then get a cheap nonrunning tomos or a maxi and apply my repair kills but it never works right and another diffreent moped seems like a cheapeer easier route to get a runner than fixing the junk i already have. The collection of non or partly running bikes would grow and after some time id get bored with the chain drives, maybe thinking variated is the way to go and hunt down a hobbit and build that to go uncomfortably fast, impractically and kinda wastefull fast with weak reliability. and at that point i'd wish i just had a simple stupid clean stock batavus and regret selling this one for 600.

Anyway, that's what i'd do, if i were you.

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

Yeah 1k for a Batavus is crazy. Back when peds were dirt cheap I would pass up a Batavus for $100. In my opinion that is a 300 or 400 bike max

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

A clean batavus bronco might be worth that to the right person, it's somewhat rare/unique, but not particularly desirable for just a regular run of the mill moped. Keep in mind that any old moped, even if it's currently running and in good shape will need tires and other wear parts replaced. Batavus have basically zero aftermarket support so not a great choice if you just want to ride.

Not worth it unless you're really into Batavuses.

She doesn't know what she's into .

I'd say , if it's a clean , stock and well running bike , buy it . It may just do what you need for years . ;)

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

If it's your favorite brand of bike, you could get one of every color and model, find a trike version, and end up with 12 of them like some idiot I know who looks a lot like me...

Totally normal JBOT /

Take off one zero and it’s an acceptable deal

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

1000 is too high. Not over 750 max.

Bats are extremely limited in terms of upgradability. Locking out the option of going faster is not a good decision for a first bike, IMO.

To the OP, I highly recommend reading this article before buying your first bike: https://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/First_moped

Re: Am I getting ripped off? In need of insight

That’s very strong money for any model Batavus, especially located in south Jersey and close to the end of riding season there. Id pass unless I could get it for around $600. (edited)

Hmm , I didn't read anything about changing the bike from stock , so ...

And , I agree , her reading the wiki buyers guide should happen before she spends money . ;)

I am in southern NH willing to work with you on a yellow motobecane that needs a good home

That Bronco doesn't even have the correct seat which is very hard to find. That being said, even a collector looking for a nice Bronco would balk at the price. Plus those idiot baskets were probably mounted by drilling holes, again greatly reducing value to a collector. I value it at between 5-600. The intact stinger pipe with heat shield is the redeeming feature.
