Tomos Rain Question

Simon Belmont /

Just wanted to get your opinion:

Went for a ride the other day it was a nice day but on the way back it started raining hard by the time I got back moped, clothes shoes were drenched. Covered the bike upon return, next day went for a ride, exhaust fired un-evenly at first but after half a mile it was okay, rode for couple miles and parked, then half hour later tried to start but it wouldn't, after 30 or so tries it started with delayed/uneven ignition firing but at least it started.

Question: should I do something to avoid future ignition issue or just wait for the bike to dry off?

Maybe it's the 10% of the fuel that's Alchol mixing with the water in the air through absorption. It sinks to the bottom . next time drain off a 10th of a tank and try.

Otherwise you have a wonky killswitch cracked ht coil bad cdi ground or trigger. Lighting and or igniton short when it's drenched.

My Tomos all ran in the rain and slop for decades. Btw I don't have a killswitch on any of them.

Re: Tomos Rain Question

I’d let it dry out for a couple days and then see how it runs. If it runs fine once dry, I’d say you have an issue someplace in the ignition system. Could be a bad spark plug wire or an issue with the coil….most likely a small crack somewhere that moisture is getting into.

I let it dry for a day and next day it starts and idles just fine but I can't use full throttle for quarter of a mile or else it starts to misfire, after quarter of a mile it runs just fine but if I park & let it stand for a while then start again it does the same thing (misfires on full throttle for a minute or so and then it runs normally). Re: Tomos Rain Question

Could you spray all connects with WD40, to chase any moisture out?

Re: Tomos Rain Question

Probably Fred /

I got the same bike as you and got stuck in the rain last week too.

Though it wasn’t raining that hard the road was very wet and I got stuck behind a truck blowing filthy mist water on me for a few miles.

When I got home I took a air hose and blew air in all these problems spots where water is easily gotten into electrical connections. A lot of water came out.

Though don’t yet have any problems. I’m going to address these areas before I do with maybe some clear waterproof tape or other things after I give it a good cleaning because I do not like how much of the electrical could get water to it on a Tomos ST, My revival TS is more sealed up then a ST or Lx even.

Figured it out - rain water got inside wire harness (on the kick-start side) and was shortening out the ignition after blowing out the wire harness with compressed air it started and ran fine, planning on using liquid electrical tape to insulate all the wires in harness.

Make sure those wires are real clean as the liquid or any other tape doesn't hold well to 'dirty' wire casings .

For a better moisture insulation , consider applying a dielectric grease . Its what it made for as its non-conductive but seals connections very well . (edited)

Re: Tomos Rain Question

I have a 2011 St amongst all the rest of my bikes and I can tell you that there are more wires on a tomos then I nearly any other bike.

But a note start situation is the same on all mopeds. It requires figuring out if there's spark or not you need to buy things or you need to pull the plug and clamp it to the frame or the cylinder and see if there's a spark when you spin the engine. The investigation starts from there. And while you're at it be careful with the incompetency of the tomos wiring attachments to the frame and places like the rear fender and the wires that come around on the left side towards the rear fender all that stuff is in danger of contact with spinning surfaces and if you're going to be going over the wiring to figure out where things are wet pay close attention to all those spots to make sure that none of the wires are in close contact with either the rear wheel or spinning elements such as the chain etc on the left side. I had to rewire and and bypass a bunch of wires that got snagged. If you were really serious about making sure that this thing is waterproof after you get it running this time you should go for another wet ride and get spray just like you describing and then when you bring it back to somewhere that is enclosed like a lighted garage will you have room to take off all the plastic and carefully see just how wet the stuff is and look at it and figure out what the heck you can do about it.

After looking trough the wire harness I decided not to use liquid tape on the connector blocks for couple reasons 1) if water somehow made it trough connector it wouldn't be able to air out fast and 2) if working on wires it would be harder to get to them.

Instead decided to cover just the top and sides of wire harness below the cover with plastic/tape leaving the bottom open for the water to escape. (edited)

My Tomos have homespun wiring harnesses no run light just 100% brake all the time.

PA handsignals are ok.

No idle screw 0 throttle = 10 seconds then dies. Cdi ground has a loop so it can be offed.

The wheel fender rerouted topside under seat and rack

3ft of wire on taillight + voltage added to create the 8 ohms in case I put points back on.

I was tempted in my free time to make the run switch electrocute you after 19 seconds of the switch being thrown but having a charged capacitor or ht circuit from a crt just screams backfire. Rain or just stupidity odds are 90% I would be the guy getting zapped not a would be the if like there would be this spot 170 ft from all my haunts I would get zapped. I would get a facial tick @ 170ft from anywhere.
