Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Bryan Teeuwen /

I just wanted to say Hi to everyone

(not sure if anyone remembers me - been a member for a long time)

but I recently got a moped again - it's crazy to think its been 14 years since I owned my last Tomos. I picked up this 1999 Targa LX that is in need of some work. (weird 22 years old? bizarre - I am getting old)

I believe it has an Alukit or some type of kit, amal carb of some size - but it came with the original top end as well. It's missing the CDI / coil (does anyone have any recommendations on that or just get the OEM one?)

Ordered some tires today.... but yeah! wanted to say Hi and will definitely be posting some more again.

would someone be able to confirm to me as well that a ZA50 CDI will work on a Tomos a35 ? its been so long I can't remember.

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

you can make a ZA50 CDI work. will have to install the flywheel without the woodruff key and set the flywheel position relative to the crankshaft. hopefully the stator+flywheel have a firing mark, but that can be found if not. Then, it would be exactly the same steps as installing an HPI ignition, there are Youtube videos for that.

the stock tomos ignition is likely better quality. (edited)

I think you are missing the HT Coil and CDI box? tomos usually has a thing thats both in one box. Post a picture of the wires that come from your stator. we need to know how many and their colors.

also...post a picture of what you do have to get better input. it def looks like a stock tomos flywheel, but its not a great pic of it either. (edited)

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Welcome back! Nice looking bike. I might pick up a 2010? Tomos Street mate. Owner claims a rock got wedged in the front sprocket and broke the chain. Hope the price is decent....Cheers.

I replaced my toasted cdi with a puch cdi, see attached image.

Plug and play, with the original stator and flywheel on my Tomos A35.

I didn't know if it would work but i took the chance and bought one and it works very well for me.

If you have the stator with more than one wire for the cdi it won't work i think.

And the proof with dirt and dust :-)

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

As punishment for not having a moped for so long, I insist that you haul your bike the 500 Kilometers to the Seattle Mariners Stadium and take a picture of you and it in front of the ballpark for my 30 Ballpark Challenge thread... Assuming the town you live in in your profile is accurate, of course.

Tomos are so underrated!

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Bryan Teeuwen /

That sounds extremely badass and once I can cross the boarder again I might have to take you up on that!

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Tried looking for the vin number stamped into the frame but it’s not where it’s supposed to be - am I confused?

Ended up doing a bit of ordering on the weekend. New tires from one place, new turn signals (Banggood) and some sweet sweet oem parts and pieces (Center stand/ignition coil cdi ) a shiny new techno bullet and a crossbar style handle bar all from the Netherlands.

Now it’s the waiting game - I need to take this Amal carb apart and clean it up / anyone know a cheaper source then 10$ per jet 😟

I should really look before posting too - I notice only now the kit is piston port and not reed block engine! Bizarre. Anyone have any idea what kit this is? He still has the paperwork from it but not sure!

Damn - I was excited about trying a reed block engine.

It totally is! Thank you - it was driving me crazy not knowing.

Now I am in sort of a weird position though - do I commit to making this kit work or do I just start investing in a kit with the proper exhaust angle so that everything won’t be a hack job (already have a techno bullet on the way) hmm 🤔

Tore into the engine finally - the ignition coil is bad - 0 ohm rating. So now I need to wait!

Replaced the crank seals / felt pretty cool to me taking apart a motor this far / haven’t done that before

Painted the mag wheels and put some new rubber on - looking fresh!

I still need a new coil / and to order a proper head gasket.

Also…. The puch tccd kit either came cracked or I cracked it… sad

Can this be used for anything now or garbage it?

Welcome back,Bryan! Glad you.re sticking to mopeds!

Yea you can cut off the cracked skirt and make it flush with the base gasket. I’ve never personally run one with a single skirt, but have heard of others will zero problems.

The hub can be slotted again any shape you want.

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

The bike is finally up and running. After assessing the startor I ended up needing a new one - bought an additional cdi to be safe. Had some pretty good air leaks on my first sssembly of the engine. Rectified that by use some ultimate grey permatex but only did the side between the intake and the reed block.

I feel like the base gasket was a weird size so i need to have another look at that and make sure my transfer ports line up nicely - will need to get a dremel or something for that.

The Amal carb took a little bit of figuring as well - seems like dead ped Ryan has the most information on it- kinda cool how the idle jet acts as an enrichment plug - ended up running a 55 jet for that but still want to mess around with it a bunch more.

I want to check my squish on the head but learning as I go.

The original speedometer was broken so I designed and printed my own dash - has a gps speedo - light switch for my fog lights - and it retains the original indicator bulbs for high beam and turn signal.

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

"dash" is really cool!

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

The dash looks great! How does it attach? I'm assuming you 3D printed it?

Yea it is!!

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Thank you!

It’s a about the same width as the original dash - I left holes in the side and it will mount with two pieces of 1-1/8 aluminum flat sheet that will be fancied up.

I also incorporated the original tomos logo into the front of the dash :)

Made some tabs to mount the speedo tonight - I think it looks pretty good - headlight needs to come out a bit further or the tabs need to be made long but I am liking it

This should be the last post about the dash - moving onto other parts of the project.

Re: Back on a Tomos after a 14 year break.

Bryan Teeuwen /

She’s getting close now.

I replaced the stock 1st gear clutch spring with a 2nd gear red spring.

Replaced the output shaft gasket and got one of those sealing nuts so I don’t get the black wheel of death.

Changed the gearing from 27 x 22 to 27 x 24 to help on the hills.

Finally got the electrics working - high / low beam / horn / indicator lights. (Need to buy some turn signals still)

Things I am struggling with still.

I feel like my timing is still out a bit - it’s too retarded I believe. Need to mess around with timing marks and more accurately finding 2mm BTDC.

Air leaks …. Pipe seems fine but I don’t have confidence in the way my reed block is sealed up - need to try using better loctite and using a stud in the hole that’s hard to access.
