Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics :(

Looking for a few ideas for my custom seat design. I really don't want to go down the leather/faux-leather road and I'm not looking for a street bike look...

I basically want to dress up my Puch seat pan to look like a seat. It's a springer seat and I have a soft-tail bike, so I'm not worried about the tush going numb on me so much as the look.

I've thought about riveted aluminum, painting it, striping it, even making a small pad for it to rivet on, but I'm at a loss...

Who out there has made a custom seat WITHOUT PADDING, and likes it?

Dan

there's that one guy with the frankenstein'd puch-tomos thing with the skateboard seat, that has a stuffed rhinoceros strapped on for cushion. i thought it was pretty resourceful.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

thats deans magnomos i think...

i've got a sweet one, but no camera, maybe later tonight.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

magnomos' seat was meant to be a temp fix so that i could ride it at my rally, but i ended up not swapping it out for a real seat. it's super comfy and everyone loves it. it just really sucks now that wet weather is here.. haha.

but that bike is off the road for a while anyway, so it's no biggie.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

Plenty of people have rocked just a Puch seatpan bolted on for a seat. I know of myself, Brendan, Brandon, and Scooby, not that you guys may know them or not. I traded my metal for a cushion once I was faced with hitting Fort Rd in Detroit on the bike. Hit that road with all the padding you can get. I pissed blood after a Fort Rd ride at Red October 1.

I'm working on something, here's a peek:

wow, nice! best looking long seat I've seen on a Maxi. I dig the small bike seats myself, like everyone else here, but that's kool.

I've seen a few chopper seat with chromed pans and a semi-padded leather insert, kool, but I like some padding. Throw some pics and ideas out, lemme see if it can be made.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

my ratbike has next to no padding in its seat, and i take it off jumps and stuff.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

R, fort st has been repaved it is smooth as shit now

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

Thanks Butnut,

It's really not that long though, just appears so due to the positioning. It really sits you back and low which I did to not only accommodate my legs, but to cut down on air resistance and is very comfortable. That particular seat on my bike is a test seat to tune the ergonomics. I'm working on a mold, but look for them to be available for sale as early as spring from a very well renowned moped shop...

hehe, anything bigger than my tiny bike seats is a long seat. Is there upholstery on that seat? Close up pic?

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

Sorry, no close up pics til they are for sale, but yes there will be a 1/2" layer of verrry dense and responsive foam which is more impermeable to water than wet-suit material. No need for upholstery. (maybe I'll email you one a pic)

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

my ratbike has a seat pan welded to the frame of the bike. I've ridden it this way for a long time, no problems. If the contour is right, it's more comfortable than most padded seats.

I currently ride this

and I used to ride this tan Newport with a metal seat pan:

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

I like those pan ideas, however they're WAY to rigid for me. I want to keep the springer in mine and utilize the seat post as well to keep it adjustable.

I think with the idea I have it may not require any padding.

I'm looking to do a few options:

1. Bondo/fiberglass the seat pan over to make it smooth, paint it black, leave it.

2. Bondo/fiberglass the seat pan smooth, paint it black, add a stripe.

3. Same as 2 only different variations on the stripe.

4. weld in an insert and bondo the pan smooth as possible, then take some aluminum, engine turn it, and attach a simple over-lay pad with some brass or stainless rivets.

5. Make the pan flat with bondo/fiberglass and then take the same sort of aluminum insert, drill holes around the edge and insert a small amount of padding and wrap it in leather, then rivet the leather to the aluminum, then rivet (from the bottom) the aluminum to the seat pan.

I've attached a couple ideas so far.

Yeah, if you could get a real nice finish on the pan, any insert will pop. I see the pan idea as having a thin upholstered pad with bolts that go through the insert 'pan' and bolt down to the larger seat pan, kinda creating a frame effect. The metal is kool, but I don't have buns of steel and since I upholster, I think of nice padding.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

I'm sorry. I was just searching the forums to read about what others have done to increase padding, because my tush hurts like I just rode a century on my bicycle after I've done 30-40 miles on my ped. So, I personally think that you all are crazy to try to ride at all without good padding.

By the way, for the boys, erectile dysfunction has been proved to be caused by excessive abuse to the perineal area (that's the medical term for that space between your woo-hoo and your ding-a-ling) If your nuts are numb when you get where you're going, you might want to reconsider the padding thing. Or you might need to take that little blue pill sooner rather than later.

I was concerned that Monkey Butt Syndrome might rear its ugly ass but after the first day at Kzoo things were fine. The springyness of the classic hairpin seat is pretty comfy once you get used to it.

Sinister78- Are your seats going to be available soon? They look pretty cool and sound very well thought out.

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

My butt loves me for purchasing that new fat ass puch seat from 77, damn thing even has it's own suspension better than shocks on the moped itself!

Re: Custom Seats.. No padding, no problem. No pics

Saw one "custom" on a Puch the other day. It was at the Oregon Vintage Motorcycle show.
