Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe - with this being 77cc - it doesnt fit the former 75cc class rule - will the October event rules be different? or will this be an unlimited class only bike?

I thought my bike was better?

All I know is if I had a water cooled set up. one of the hose would pop off and I would get burned by hot water.

My bike looks fucked up but I appreciate the thought. I gotta this carb issue with it hitting the frame but yea it’s cool

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

i don’t get how christophe is gonna have a hard time keeping the front end of the bike down if someone else is racing on it?

is that sorta like cumming super hard when you’re getting cucked???

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

I'm gonna guess "moped" unlimited, I think back in the days we set the limit at 99cc, but the biggest engine I remember seeing a the time was a dual variated 90cc Stage6.

They'll probably fit any fast mopeds 50cc and above (but separated for the podium) within the motorized bicycle unlimited class including some monster 212cc 4stroke engines... those rip, the torque and power to weight ratio are insane. I test rode one of them 5 years ago... fun and scary at the same time :)

I've always competed in the unlimited class or any class with 50cc engines only. Never actually raced bigger engines, not even 70cc moped kits.

I upgraded once my Puch Maxi E50 cases inducted race bike from an AIrsal 50cc H2o cheap scooter kit which performed pretty good, to a Metrakit 77cc Pro Race kit, but don't remember personally hitting the track with it during a moped race event, I think I played with it in the streets and sold the bike.

In other words I'm not super attached to the cc rule, I've always competed against much bigger engines, or even faster bikes like those mini moto Kawasaki KX65 or KX80 didn't win any of the races in their classes but the challenge was always fun.

I'm just excited to finally bring something bigger than a 50cc moped at the track. But I'll probably enjoy lifting the front end during the tuning phase in the streets of LA, and probably hit the freeway at some point for a top speed run... people love seeing that shit on social media... "what's your top speed bro?"... we'll bring some footage :) (edited)

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

We might have a moped class at the next race. Last race in April we had 10-15 mopeds show up, and they were in the bike classes based on their speed, but racing just for "fun," no trophies, since it's still technically "motorized bicycle" races.

Otherwise, your bike would definitely run with the unlimited class, which is 8hp and up. Reynie beat out Scotto's 212cc predator monster at the last race.

I'll talk to the promoters and see if they've planned any moped classes.

It's kind of a "more the merrier" type of deal. The more riders we get, the more money it brings in, and it helps keep our "sport" alive.

Any mopeds that want to come out, know that it's not the AMRA rules, or a moped free for all.

You need proper gear, no partying if you're going on the track, noise curfew if camping Friday night, no fireworks, etc.

Tracks are coming down hard on their rules, and if they're broken, we can't race there anymore.

If I find out more about moped classes, I'll make a post...

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

That's good news if they can make room for 1 or 2 moped classes.

Either way, it's fun to jump in with the motorbikes, that scene as being quite consistent over the years, dedicated for sure... the more riders the more elbows to rub against.

I saw the race at "Grange" in the Unlimited class with Reynie doing good with one of my motobecane 50cc bikes against the two 212cc motorbikes, fun battles.

That was his first time riding the bike and I think his best lap time was 1:13, pretty impressive.

Keep us posted.

I'm gonna soon swap the Polini 50cc engine with the monster MHR 77cc, and start mocking up the engine spring lower brackets.

thanks.

my first race track moby project, actually a team project with our riding moped club back in 2011 under $1,000 budget using an old 50v chassis bought for a $100 and a free washed out Bidalot replica 50cc cylinder, stock spoke wheels, front disc brake custom mounted.

It evolved over the years from the Bidalot 50cc air cooled setup to Doppler 50cc air cooled to finally Polini 50cc h2o and now Malossi 77cc h2o.

From Polini 50cc to Malossi 77cc

I'm gonna miss that good old Polini engine, fast and reliable throughout the entire racing season... it was time to service it anyway, hasn't run since 2017 and the piston ring needs to be replaced with a new one to get the full compression back.

Awesome Work! Can't wait to hear it come alive

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

Thanks man.

Still a long way to go as I'm doing only half hour here and there.

But so far no issues with the belt alignment or variator clearance.

Next step is the engine spring lower bracket design + launch lever mount.

Two adjustable positions for two different clutch pulley's diameters.

Can't wait to twist the throttle for sure :)

My secret stock av7 variator modified... not my work.

A rare and vintage piece from the late 80's, a special gift from a Motobecane dirt racer during a visit at the French tracks in 2015.

That was right before people started adapting Peugeot weight arms to their Motobecane variator, and Motobecane cdi to their Peugeot points large taper crank :)

Peugeot = better variator design

Motobecane = better cdi ignition

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Totally normal JBOT /

That pipe is gonna hit crazy high on 77cc.

That pipe would hit high on a 50, then add all that extra displacement....

it’s not a problem until the bearings rip apart but ya.... revvin big for awhile should be awesome af. Scooter bearings are much bigger than standard moped crank bearings so I bet they’ll hold up for quite awhile.. I forgot these were scooter cases (edited)

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

We live for those high rpms :)

Single variated 88cc Bidalot WR scooter kit 90+ mph... screaming... :)

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

:(

Time to retire the 50cc Polini Gr2 Nikasil version. It needs a full service, piston ring, maybe piston, gaskets, variator.

This kit was as powerful as any Bidalot 50cc engine in the straight.

Too bad it's discontinued...

Super reliable race after race @12,500 rpm all day... using my favorite and cheapo stock motobecane cdi ignition which I put to the test against the MVT premium external rotor, then against the HPI internal rotor advanced timing... the motobecane smashed them both throughout the entire range.

The Moryama is a reference, such a simple but powerful ignition unit designed by the Japanese way back. I use it on all my setups under 13,000 rpms.

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

Super happy with the first lower bracket mockup, it's dead on.

Doppler engine spring tension is perfect, carburetor bowl and launch lever linkage clearance are perfect, exhaust ball joint and radiator clearance good as well.

I'm gonna use that template to fabricate 2 thicker plates bolted on each side on the engine cases + a spacer between them to mount and secure the launch lever ball joint.

I'll also be able to adjust the spring mount and launch lever for 2 different diameter size clutch pulley, from Doppler 195mm to C.Bouchet 175mm roughly, using the same 17mm scooter belt length.

The pipe is not final, I haven't even started working on it. I'll play the volume, total length, probably stinger diameter. I have MORE pipes to test and play with til I get the right one for that setup. I'm not looking for a screamer but a torquy and reliable track engine that can last one or two entire seasons, not just a 1/4 mile race and rebuild :)

Pretty the same as all my previous 50cc race track engines, fast, reliable, low maintenance.

Re: 77cc VARIATED MOBY IT'S HAPPENING

Christophe Naulet /

The lower bracket design was a big step, that could slow you down and waste a lot of time if don't nail it right away. Everything has to custom and most of the time super tight fitting.

But I'm happy with this version... moving on, no time to waste... cause the tuning part is gonna be the biggest part, not the engine build or custom fab.

Jetting, variation, gearing, power and reliability... those are the real challenges that can consume a lot of time. (edited)
