CYBERMOPED

IN THE BEGINNING

in_the_beginning.jpg

There was a General Five Star rotting away in a barn in rural Indiana. It had been ridden hard, but turned over, and it was purchased for $300.

seat_pan.jpg

The seat was rock hard and deflated, so it was sent off to moped_seat_dude for repair. He expertly welded up and painted the cracked pan, replaced the petrified foam, and sewed up a kickass cover with neon green accents.

moped_seat_dude.jpg

The maker received the seat, and was happy.

Re: CYBERMOPED

partially_stripped.jpg

The CYBERMOPED was then stripped of its parts, to be purified. Over 12,000 miles of filth caked its every surface.

crank_pipe.jpg

A super rad crank pipe was obtained (102mm belly) for the rebuild, and it was test fit to the maker's satisfaction.

The bottom end was rebuilt (no photos unfortunately) with new bearings, seals, and gaskets. The starter plate was utterly thrashed, so it will be replaced (as soon as the maker receives a new one from treatland).

Meanwhile, the maker brewed some software. A smart dashboard for the CYBERMOPED was begun. Temperature monitoring, audio output, and a simple display were made ready for its eventual birth.

Re: CYBERMOPED

Other build details:

V1 motor, obvs

48mm BRN kit ("80cc")

V1 reed adapter (xoxo Maitland)

MLM 24mm intake

TM24 flat slide

vforce 8 petal reeds

Red stage6 clutch springs

Re: CYBERMOPED

The theme for this build is 80s retro-futurism / cyberpunk. This has nothing to do with the video game except for a shared enjoyment of that aesthetic.

Re: CYBERMOPED

I can’t wait to see some hubless wheels on this thing 😂

Re: CYBERMOPED

Very nice, I am really interested in following this build. (I kind of already have been lol) - though I haven't seen these pics.

Re: CYBERMOPED

that dashboard will be wild. so excited to see this

That smart dash is gonna be so awesome, I love it! Makes me think of Far Cry 3's "Blood Dragon" DLC. Love 80's themed spacey stuff

That's one of the big inspirations for this build!

Re: CYBERMOPED

I’m glad you made a thread on this! Definitely excited to see the finish product. That dash is killer. Cranks pipe looks sick! Looks like a good parts list for v1

Re: CYBERMOPED

Terbo Speghetti /

I love that people are doing this. I've got plans for a touchscreen dash and fridge in my seat, I should post a build thread

Re: CYBERMOPED

Meanwhile I just want an Atari dash and cartridge as a key.

Re: CYBERMOPED

How’d your brn turn out? Mine was an absolute mess, had to be cleaned up a lot and spaced out corrected with the Dan Schulz spacer.

Re: CYBERMOPED

cleanish.jpg

The maker cleaned most of the grime off with a pressure washer.

supercustom.jpg

The maker discovered that the headlight brackets had been... upgraded... with sheet metal and wood screws. A new system might have to be fabricated.

headlight_brackets.jpg

But all was well! The maker was pleased to discover that the original headlight brackets were in fact intact.

Re: CYBERMOPED

nearly_naked_frame.jpg

The maker continued stripping bits off of the frame, taking note of each item. Soon the frame would be ready for the purification ritual (sandblasting).

sometimes_you_feel_like_a_nut.jpg

In many cases the fasteners were... odd... like the wood screws used on the headlight bracket. Many errant washers, many foreign bolts. The maker would remedy these errors.

The maker does indeed plan to use a Dan Schulz spacer. The maker has not started the ritual of portification (porting for reeds), but he anticipates having to do lots of cleanup work as well.

Do it!

Sounds rad, do it!

That's what I was hoping. It's hard to find anything cyberpunk since cyber77 came out. It seems people have forgotten it's even a thing like steampunk and dieselpunk. I bet you could get some ideas from YassidDesign.

Re: CYBERMOPED

bare_frame.jpg

The maker finished tearing down the frame, and found a few more surprises.

kersmashed.jpg

At some point the bike was probably blasted into a curb. It looks like someone tack welded the torn bit back together, but this will not do. It will have to be repaired.

kickstand.jpg

The kickstand was also... "expertly" repaired.

points for ingenuity!

I was wondering if maybe the level of sanity changed . ;)

Re: CYBERMOPED

Haha

I'm curious too see where this goes, I'm trying to set up the arduino for my dyno right now and haven't decided how to do real-time output. Might be time to force myself to learn some python?

Define real-time? Hard real-time systems use strict control with timer driven interrupts, but that's probably finer granularity than you need.

Maybe some c++? That's where the very fine time control is at

If you don't need full real-time, soft real-time with Nerves is a really really nice development experience

Re: CYBERMOPED

The maker has been busy, but some progress has been made. He took a brief welding class and laid down his first beads on some scrap steel.

first_tig.jpg

First tig welds ever, no welding rod on the bottom.

first_mig.jpg

Mig welder goes brrrrrrrrr, and lays down some slugs.

dashboard_2.png

The maker also spent some time drawing lines procedurally in a programming sketchbook (processing). This will help make the dashboard project even cooler.

The maker should stop putting off porting the BRN cylinder for reeds. The maker has identified a shop that will sandblast the frame, swingarm, and gas tank at an affordable price, and the maker's club's powder coating booth / oven is just about ready.
