Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

My hobbit now has a 26mm carb and the stock tank. I could use a fuel reserve bottle..

Is there cheaper things to use than the $25 1.5l fuel bottles I see on the internet? What about aluminum or stainless water bottles?

What’s the best thing to use on the cheap (edited)

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

Didn’t someone say they bought those premix shelf stable cans from the hardware store and just reuses them?

The plus was that they come with fuel, so ya aint buying an empty bottle.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

One of the liter bottles of trufuel ethanol free gas from the hardware store. It's a nice steel bottle. Been using one for years.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

I've been looking at these to shove into the step through of my Peugeot. They range from 1 liter to 15 liters, just have to look around.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

It would cost a little bit but they make some pretty large yeti tumblers. But maybe a double walled version is not ideal, so maybe there is a single walled yeti knock off that would be cheaper.

That is a fantastic idea.. thank you

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

I use a msr white gas bottle for a camping stove. I know this is exactly what you're saying you don't want to spend the money on but they're designed to last basically forever, rugged enough to throw around in a backpack and im 100% sure it won't leak. I can't say that about a bottle designed to sit on a shelf and then be discarded once empty. 20 bucks is well worth the peace of mind when im carrying extra fuel in a backpack. Just sayin

My friend uses this as he also would use it for camping. The HUGE bonus about this is that the wall mounts for fire extinguishers fit this perfect. They are literally the same dimensions for the neck and body of the bottle.

We mounted it underneath the actual tank (drilled into the crossbar).

The thing I don’t like about fire extinguishers is that the steel ones are very heavy. The aluminum ones shed aluminum particles even after being cleaned multiple times.. so I’ll pass

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

I looked around for fuel bottles for occasional long trips, and found that it was real hard to beat a bottle of trufuel for my particular use case. A quart of that stuff costs $6 filled with 50:1 fuel, but I bought a couple just for the bottles. Dedicated reusable 1L fuel bottles like $25. The trufuel bottle is definitely flimsier, but folks reuse them for years.

Is the cap plastic or metal

TruFuel caps are steel. I've also used these for years. Buddy works for a small engine shop and people bring these in to recycle their gas and he just keeps them.

Had them upside down in backpacks and never had a leak.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

This is some good info. The fire extinguisher bracket ideer is a good one.

I've bought a bunch of those shitty aluminum water bottles at goodwill, they work good, I've replaced o-rings on them because the ones they come with are usually shot. I have a really purty purple one

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

I've used the MSR fuel bottles, they're $20 ish at REI. The 20oz fits in a bicycle water bottle cage.

I know you said you wanted something cheaper, but these work great, single walled, lightweight, cap never leaks, and you can strip the paint off and polish them.

True that. My tank is always out of gas. Dang thirsty kits.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

When I was cutting trees I used to carry a nos energy drink bottle full of gas. Not sure if they make them like that anymore but they were a good sized thick aluminum bottle with a screw on cap.

On the rare occasion I have needed to carry xtra fuel this is what I have used, purpose built, never leak.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

There are tons of really cool and sturdy fire ex brackets you can buy for racecars, fire trucks, tow trucks, etc. Can't believe I've never thought to do that.

Re: Traveling with smol moped tank and BIGUN CRABs

Would one of those mini kegs be too big for you? Like the Heineken ones? I've also seen virgil's root beer does a rootbeer keg...

What I really want is to see available for sale is a 1gallon tank that can easily and quickly strap between tall style handlebars or to a rear rack.

Or a thin seat designed with a tank under it. Most bench seats have so much room under them.

Or an easy diy tube frame tank kit for frames that aren’t usually filled, no cap needed.....just vented up top so let’s say on a hobbit you could fill the main tank and the frame would fill and it output fuel thru the T fitting at the petcock. Of course you’d have to seal any bolt fittings into the frame. But having an extra 1/2 to 3/4 gallon without another tank on the bike would be pretty awesome
