Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Picked one of these up “used” recently from VDM Puch Parts out of curiosity. It used 4 rubber pucks similar to a ZA50 in what I can only assume is an attempt to reduce gear lash...

Anybody know what model this came on and why they thought it was a necessary redesign? It’s stamped Puch so I believe it’s an original factory part, just never see n one before.

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

That's pretty neat, what's the weight difference?

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

The “puck” model is only 2oz heavier than the regular model (I only have a shitty scale that doesn’t do grams) (edited)

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Borrowed a kitchen scale :)

Original gear (with bearings and seal) - 915g

Puck gear (with bearings and seal) - 967g

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

I think it’s an early model thing. Pretty sure The redesign is what we all know and love.

So maybe they over-engineered it to begin with and then decided they could cut costs with a simpler design?

Hehe I’m a comfy guy

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

I have the same ones 🤣

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Looks like you might be able to cut some new atomic pucks in half and replace them. You gotta run that thing.

I have cracked open a fair share of 1969 E50's and i've never seen a gear like that in my life.

My best bet is that's is a prototype from the late 70's or 80's.

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Mike run that shit for reals. I want one if I was going to straight cut gears. I'm super interested in seeing more of this.

Ya, an e50 is an ideal platform for this sort of thing. Easily change out the pucks every few years, and the rest of the tranny would last you long time.

I'm betting its a late model improvement (1984 ish) that they did for some fancy models but they were already basically winding down production and it basically was forgotten as cost saving methods stopped it from living a full life.

Anyways it clearly looks better designed, but also significantly more expensive to produce than the stock one

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Would it help the gears last longer?

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

The only time the gears have ever gone south on me is when a circlip pops off or something else becomes shrapnel in the cases.

I mean yeah it would help the gear last longer for sure.

It's like the cush drive in motorcycle rear ends which is really just pucks to take up lash forces.

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

I would like to see this setup on a straight cut gear setup which has the issues with breaking after a short amount use. I'm sure this would help reduce the vibrations and help them last longer. Maybe even long enough to be useful outside of a race bike.

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

More pics after disassembly. Pucks are larger than ZA50 style. The gear slots into the center shaft, pucks are pressed in, and retaining plate is added. Theoretically you could run the gear in either direction...?

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Why not put some aluminum or bronze slugs in there.

This is probably the reason for the change. They would need a way to replace a main gear on older and newer e50s without replacing the the clutch bell too. I'm sure some service shops and dealers ran into problems when the switch was made to reverse cut.

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Plan on making/having some new pucks made up for this?

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Yeah these pucks look pretty good tbh but might as well find some material of the right diameter and cut some new ones while I have it apart. I don’t really have a planned use for this yet I was mostly just curious.

Flipping the gear doesn’t change the tooth cut but maybe they made a version that was reverse cut?

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

What do atomic/mlm use to make their aftermarket pucks from I wonder?

Delrin (delran?) I think, but you can find Droidy on the innernets maybe

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

This is getting better by the minute. Thanks mike!

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

Did some more reading, and sounds like the OG and most aftermarket stuff has been Urethane based, but Paz was using something else pretty solid that would hold up better and for longer, just haven’t found out what yet unless it’s Delrin that Maitland pointed out (edited)

Re: Odd e50 main gear - Anybody know the backstory?

I would think delrin would be wayyy to hard. I machine that stuff in a lathe. Way too hard
