The worst moped i've ever bought

Every now and then I'll come across one of these that has been sitting outside and to be honest, the seller wants too much money and I'll pass.

I needed a V1 for a project i'm working on and my buddy had this motron. He says 'its pretty rough, man, i dunno' and i'm like 'Yeah whatever i don't care, i just need the motor for a rebuild.

Yeah, this thing was like in a pond or a flood or something at one point, its insane. The tank was literally full of mud, the trans was full of water, took like 2 hours of beating on it with a torch and hammer to split the cases last night and i think it might be a total loss, or maybe i'll just do something dumb with the cases? I dunno.

What's the worst moped you've ever bought? (edited)

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

What should I do with this thing? Melt it down?

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

I wonder how a quick pressure wash would make things look.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

This derbi saw better days. Working slow and carefully on cleaning this thing up. I swear it will run again one day.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Mating surfaces seem ok... soak in Evaporust and then brush with Ospho and see what it looks like then?

its been sitting in the parts washer overnight, i filled it up with mineral spirits and letting it soak. if i can get that hub off the gear shaft, i can put all the steel stuff in muriatic acid and maybe save it, but its rust-welded on there. if i try to hit it with muriatic acid while its still in the aluminum cases, there wont be any aluminum left.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Oh you can totally run that, evaporust in a bucket and new bearings/probably crank too and fucking send it

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Man now I want to play with a v1

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

As a Motron lover, and I have 10, and I'm a little butt hurt here.

Since that company, like many others of the day, only made the frame, tank, and plastic, I would tend to separate those parts from the Domino controls, CEV electronics and speedometer, Grimica rims, and Minarelli V1 engine.

From that angle, the tank looks better on the outside than a couple I have come across in the last couple years, and that color red does make it difficult to judge surface rust and patina.

But I agree that the V1 looks pretty bad. I wouldn't be surprised if it can be salvaged, though, for those of you who know how to rebuild them.

Just don't pick on my Motrons, or I'll have to drive out there next summer, catch a Brewers / Indians game with you, and haul that cute roller back to northeast Ohio with me.

Evaporust! The steel will come out looking like new, won't hurt aluminum. I think it'll be saveable.

worst moped i ever paid for

thumbnail-20.jpg

i'll never come close recouping what i spent on this turd.

Moped Lar (OFMC) /

The worst moped I ever bought was an Angel. I paid a whopping $10 for it. Ended up giving it away at one of my annual rides. Thank god i didn't pay more for it or spend a bunch of money and time fixing it.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

That looks salvageable to me. Where's your sense of adventure?

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

♣Slew Foot♣ /

My Damn Sachs.

I had like 4 seasons on it.

Paid 75 for a roller. 250 on titlework. 400 on parts.

Now it has a 2 speed shifty that needs a rebuild. It's a money pit.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

My Cuyuna Scorpion SC2X had a diarrhea problem too.

Gunk engine degreaser, hosed it all out, dried it, works fine.

Smelled like crap the first time I fired it up, but it runs perfect (ish.)

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Yeah I mean it's totally not worth saving but I still spent like 2 hours yesterday and about one today tearing it down and seeing what I could save. The steel parts all spent about 3 hours in muriatic acid and some of it will be salvageable but it would take more to piece it back together than its worth.

No hate on the motrons in general, I love them and I've always wanted one. I've passed on a few over the years, maybe I'll do something cool with the frame. The tank I'll try to save.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Yay!

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

It's a V1. You probably coulda just put fresh oil in it and fired it up.

Seriously, though, I've seen, and repaired worse.

I woulda soake everything but the stator plate in some fresh evaporust (maybe even the stator plate, probably wouldn't hurt it) for a day or two, get new bearings and seals, and it'd be fine.

Unless the rust is so bad that it destroyed the gears, V1s are pretty indestructible.

Fuckin A. Rebuild and go.

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

I don’t know if y’all remember the first pics of that unidentified moped I used for my kid’s electric project.

Had to dig it out of the ground and the frame had about 15* bend in the middle.

That Motron looks mint compared to this thing:

^ I think we have a winner........I think... :D

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

Dez from the cranks bought a bike in New orleans that had been in Katrina then sat in the mud for a couple years, it was pretty bad.

🇮🇹💦 Of the Loin /

Wtf Boyd you never came to the V1 lyfe?

It is the only lyfe for me

Also yeah none of that looks all that bad, slap some yamabond on the case gasket(both sides)

I have one set of cases that has been in use for about 12-15 years and has sat with water in it for at least 1 winter

One of the case bolts is stripped but no leaks :)

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

I bought a Columbia commuter yesterday.

Might be the worst ever.

But it won’t be for long

Can’t wait to rip into that solo weirdness

Re: The worst moped i've ever bought

I knew an auctioneer that when selling anything with a questionable engine would say. "It ran the last time they started it."

I used to restore Maytag gas hit & Miss engines and my saying about them was

" You can't get them started and when you do they won't run."

I don't know what it is about these but they are all in such bad shape. I had to search forever to find one that isn't ready to break in half. But then again, rust belt lyfe.

The Columbia commuter is a sachs, the open road is the variated solo. I hope you actually got the latter. Treats has soooo many solo engines. I think they just don’t have clutch/var parts for them. I hacked a French g3 pipe and puch wheels/sprocket and had it up into the 40s. It is such a bullet proof moped, but you should replace the idler bearing and basically the only maintenance is to keep it greased up.
