I don't have one of these — the photos below are from this tweet — but it caught my attention. The tweet says "its insulator is made of borosilicate glass instead of the alumina ceramic, so you can see the colour of the flame inside the cylinder and adjust the fuel-air mixture accordingly."
Has anyone ever seen or used one of these? Did you find it useful?
In the big Honda bike world , they get used occasionally and always have rec'd good reviews .
That's tuning multi cylinder 4 strokes , but , I'd think the principle is the same for 2 strokes .
I've seen them and they look cool but for the price of one I'll just do plug chops
I bought one off amazon. Colortune brand but design is a little different than that.
What I realized is you really need a dyno or something to see how the fuel mixture/spark is behaving under load, otherwise it's just higher revs on the center stand and not accurate throttle positions on the road.
Hard to see and a little hard to use, but I do dig the concept. Maybe someone else can chime in with better ways to use em
I thought about these a while back but as Mike said, no use for understanding mixture under load at different revs. I've only seen them used on 4 strokes to carb balance, but I like the idea (edited)
I remember them from the 60s and 70s. pure crap. my father had some to tune a corvair race engine.
I've got one, don't use it too often. It's at least nice to see if your idle is rich/lean.
It's a tool. You don't know how to use it if you don't use it. Don't use it to start and warm up your engine.
If all it's meant to do is show the tune of your idle (after warming up the motor as per the instructions) then ok it sort of does that. Without a dyno I don't see how it can also show the accurate mixture at other throttle positions which is what I really wanted it for.
Not sure it would help 2-stroke mix fuel adjustments? Possibly.
It’s a pretty cool tool, I’ve used them before to aid in finding a good base idle tune on new builds with experimental carb/kit combinations.

You asked for it...
I have a small engine test plug hooks on fins and pops if the sparks hot enough.
Cool feature I guess 2t oil type would figure in there.
