CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

This is my Cornflakes bike. If you look at a box of Cornflakes you'll see it. Tyler left this 1978 SL roller with me when he moved north to SAC. I've had it for at least three years and have finished the build. It's quick, real quick, does wheelies and all that BS. It's most comfortable at 35-40. I like just cruisin with my feet on the floorboards.

Wow, nice!

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

nice job Todd.

love the 1990's nerf blaster aesthetic.

Is the Derbi vertical FDS JB Weld cylinder a stop gap from using a kid's dirt bike cylinder?

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Cornflakes ... you're too modest .

More like Frosted Flakes , cause it's Grrrreat . ;)

Seriously , nice clean build with just enough .

Finally, a cool thing

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Cornflakes: because it runs good for 5 minutes, then gets all soggy.

Just kidding.

This bike is a breath of fresh air. I’m inspired by your creativity, ability, and tools.

Everything just looks so solid. Like, most mopeds you can grab onto stuff and just flex and wiggle. Not so with Cornflakes.

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Did you use freeze plugs for the pedal shaft and detent seals?

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

todd amundson /

Yes those are metric freeze plugs. Some Mazda junk. Pedal shaft is cut short but still rides on the drawn cup bearings. If you leave the shaft seals in place it’s kind of a waist.

Hi someone asked how I got the front variator to come to a stop on a shoulder that's .5 mm in hight. There's a groove that I assume is 15mm OD so I double stacked two circlips, cut the teeth out of the ramp plate and welded a support ring directly to the plate. As the mounting nut tightens down, the circlips will be pushed against the hairline shoulder and want to expand out but can't. Kinda sketch but works great. The teeth on the ramp plate would not allow the front assembly to go inbound all the way which is what you want on this set up. Front as close to case as possible, rear as far from case as possible.

Yum! Looks fun.

Love the headlight tooooo

Damn that's a sweet build.

I didn't see the beak right away. good shit. red grips will set it off.

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

One more question, How did you ever fit that crank in the flatreed?

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

todd amundson /

Puch cranks are obviously narrower and have smaller cheeks so going in it fits but, the bearings need to be spaced out about 1.5 mm on each side and I’m using 17mm I’d bearings in the case The jog output is normally 19mm od but when machining the shaft to press into the crank, for some reason I made it 17mm.

Case volume isn’t much of a problemo as of yet. Maybe causes a little gulp at low rpm but I haven’t been able to verify.

Got my new swingarm from treats. It’s aluminum and is the later style with webbing and no brake stay. I welded a stay tab to my caliper mount and attached a gusset. This is my first rear mount caliper on top of the rotor. There’s a good reason why it should be mounted under the swingarm and I’ll stick to it in the future.

What is the good reason for it to be mounted under the swingarm

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

todd amundson /

The swing of the caliper mount should be pulling on the the brake stay as opposed to pushing it as I have. Easier to break in my configuration.

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Holy fuck. I don't understand the caliper mounting thing, even though you explained it out, but is that how the swingarm broke?

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

todd amundson /

When braking the rotor will push the caliper forward towards the front of the bike. My gusset stops this forward push. A broken gusset bolt caused the break before. It’s better to have a caliper gusset pulling on the assembly instead of pushing on an assembly.

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Dang that is crazy the swing arm broke. Glad you are ok. If something like that happen to a bike my wife was riding on she would had been toast.

Is that the same crank we did years ago for your variated puch?

this thing

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

todd amundson /

Sure is Tyler. I remember you taking that picture on the day you and a friend rolled through. It was that night my cctv caught you sneaking up on me. You asked if it was like a $400 crank now and I pretty much agreed. I never figured out how to put a jog 90 crank inside or what ignition taper they have. That’s the true Derbi tuning shit.

Re: CORNFLAKES,DERBI SL,FR,FDS,RITO,DUAL SHA,POLARIS,ETC.

Woah, that's wild

How did you guys weld that crank? That's some next level voodoo shit

They come on some cheap Chinese brake cables from amazon but Jawa uses the same.
