What is this? Garelli Something

Just ran across this for a couple hun. Might go make an offer, if I can talk the wife into a 3 hour round trip. She’s working 7 days a week tho, so probably not.

I don’t have a Garelli in my collection. Is this a good first candidate?

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

Usually called a gulp. They have this weird subframe that the engine attaches to. Please please please check the subframe for any cracks. They are notoriously weak. If it has cracking and is worth it to you to get that taken care of, it is a great engine IMO. Just not real sure how great these frames are on kitted engines. Might need to stay stock. It looks real nice in the pic tho.

I would scoop that up for anything less than $400, and would not pay more than $100 if that subframe is cracked. Have a nice day trip!

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

You mean like these cracks?

Thanks for the heads up! I’m glad he posted good pictures!

Looks like those could be repaired pretty easily .

Maybe even make a whole new sub frame without a lot of trouble .

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

looks like a garelli basic, real smooth ride, one speed noi, the handles on the controls r super long.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

Not currently running. Broke piston ring.

I think I’m gonna skip this one. Who knows where the chunks of piston ring ended up. And cracked subframe to boot. Probably not worth the drive.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

Yeah that's a $150-200 bike with those issues

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

It’s advertised at $200, but I don’t think I wanna even go make an offer. I’ve got enough projects.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

I always thought the frame was cool and would make for some fun hobbit type swap, or maybe a frenchie but you have to maybe make a rigid rear end.

It's a Garelli Basic. Can't really tell if those are cracks, $200 max.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

If they are not cracks. They will be. They are where the cracks happen, and in the same place on both sides.

Maybe they are weak on the OG basics, I have only ever played with the Garelli Gary Uno/Due ones that are substantially robust. I typically avoid Garelli for the rubber clutch and ignition issies, but the Surflex clutch and CDI on the Gary's solve those issues.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

Dillon, dont be skeerd of the rubber. No problems on my end, and if they "blow up" it's just some rubber to clean out. Not chunks of metal.

I have only had one bike give me ignition issues, but I switched out the points and blasted off to the moon. Over all I have really loved all the garelli bikes I have owned.

I don't really fuxx with 1/2 speed bikes anyways, but when I am looking to build bikes for customers I avoid rubber clutches when I can, just too much potential wear points vs. the Gary Uno motors which literally have an E50 clutch in them.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

I get ya. I'm just not cool enough to work a manual clutch and shifter...

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

It's a standard auto clutch, just Surflex friction clutch vs. rubber hockey puck

That's one big reason I want to engine swap mine; rubber clutch.

Re: What is this? Garelli Something

Havent had an issue with my clutches. Easy to change out when they do act funny. I bought a couple extra from reading the issues. Have been sitting on them for a while now. But I would like to find one of those uno clutches and try it, or the trick metric one if it is ever available again.
