Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

What are ya'll opinions on getting a frame and wheels professionally prepped & painted vs the old fashion rattle can and 4k clear.

Professionally: $200-$450

Rattle can and clear: $50 or less

Yes, the prep works is the hardest thing and what you pay for to have it professionally done and done correctly. Is it worth the extra couple hundred bucks as far a longevity of the paint, hardness, and overall looks. What type of results have everyone been getting?

Also, if anyone could correct or critique the below steps

Prep steps for DIY:

Clean and degrease

sand 320grit all areas

re-clean

alcohol clean

primer

base (2coats)

4k Clear or clear of choice (3coats)

Let cure for 3 days aproximate

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

Of course professional is the best option. Almost nobody has their ped professionally painted.

Your prep looks good. I let each color coat cure for a couple days and wet sand in between. Don’t rush that.

Clear can get runny real easy.

3 days is a joke. Let that stuff sit for a month to cure. If you put anything against it before then, it will deform/imprint the paint. Possibly stick and pull paint off.

Unless you have a way to accelerate the curing.

Look up DIY paint booth. A clean area to spray and it will get hot inside for a place for it to cure.

Papa, did you do your rims black with the red pin stripe? Did you just tape it off and do the red?

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

I like to powder frames and wheels and stuff like fork lowers that get a lot of abuse but I think paint is a better finish for cosmetics like tanks and tins.

I use a single stage urethane for most Moto stuff, it's cheap and easy to work with, it's real tough and if it gets scratched you can buff it out

Graham, Do sell that in a can or anything like it? Don't really want to buy a sprayer for only one or maybe to frames

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

The 2k thing is kinda slang for catalyzed urethane, I don't really know everything about the tech but basically it's a paint with catalyst in a can where you push a button and pop the internal catalyst and the paint starts to 'set' then you have a certain amount of time to spray it.

Auto paint shops can put custom mixed paint in a rattle can, maybe they can also do the catalyzed urethane too? I dunno. I bought a quart of black back in 2015 for about 60 bucks and my spray gun was 120$ back in 2006, that quart of black has painted like 2 motorcycle and 3 mopeds... Pretty good investment for pro quality results.

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

A couple of years ago I repainted a Suzuki RL250 with catalyzed paint in a rattle can that I bought at an auto body supply shop. Turned out nice! I also had good success painting a '71 Honda CB450 with Duplicolor paints from Autozone then covering it with 2K clear. Shiny and fuel resistant.

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

The duplicolor OEM matched paint with the 2k 'spraymax' clear is a really good way to go, if you wet sand it and buff it out it's damn near pro

Re: Powder Coat Vs. Rattle and 4k Clear Coat

powdercoat will smooth out numps n dents n suck, but the finish iant nearly as shiny. ive done both and was happy with both

Good tips I appreciate it. For sanding how important is it to get everything and to what degree? Just to rough up the surface? For a maxi frame realistically how long should it take to sand? Just to give me a idea.

That red on the wheels and tank are reflective tape. At night, when a light hits the broadside of my moped, it’s like ET’s spaceship.

Very easy to apply. Looks good. Makes me safer.

I only have this pic, with crappy cell phone flash, from when I was still building it. Still it shows some serious glow power.
