Moped Insurance Ohio

Does anyone know the laws for insurance on mopeds in Ohio?? Getting quite a few mixed answers. Last I heard the only thing (paperwork wise) you need is the registration, plate, and a valid drivers license. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

I've heard mixed things about this too. I believe insurance is NOT required for a moped in Ohio, but every time I renew my registration, I have to sign that form stating I have insurance.

https://bmv.ohio.gov/vr-other-moped.aspx#gsc.tab=0 No mention here about insurance.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

You don't need insurance on mopeds in Ohio. Just registration-plate- Ohio DLs.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

Thank you!!!

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

You do not need insurance on a moped in Ohio. Cops can try to ticket you for it but if you speak with certainty and either have the law printed with your registration or are able to reference it off the top of your head they usually won't bother. If they do ticket you it's an easy win in court.

Ohio Revised Code 4501.01(B) states that mopeds are not defined as motor vehicles, and thus are exempt from the law requiring insurance for all motor vehicles.

Yep you are so correct Nick

if you don’t show the info to a cop he will will write you a ticket for not having insurance because they don’t know the law

once you have the ticket good luck beating it in court I know a few people that lost and only one that won because the judge didn’t know the law Either,

Maybe would’ve won under appeal but traffic court judges don’t have time to look over the whole law and the losers couldn’t afford to take any more days off from work,

I myself won a insurance law ticket as well as several other ones

(For No helmet, no eye protection, no helmet no eye protection for my passenger, no motorcycle endorsement, no working headlights, taillights, no license plate, no turn signals etc.) I got for driving a dirtbike on a public beach (Edgewater Park) because a dirtbike is not a licensed motor vehicle,

I was looking at Possible Time in jail in, thousands of dollars of fines but all I had to do was pay the ticket for the one Ticket driving a motor vehicle on the beach was at the time was only like $50 and court costs, it took me to miss two mornings of work though!

I was going to contest that ticket also because it was a dirtbike not listed as a motor vehicle but I shut up because I didn’t wanna press my luck as well as missing more work!

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

Insurance is always a good ideal even if law doesn't require it. Your out on a nice summer ride when you rear end a brand new Porsche 911 turbo that only has twenty miles on it.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

i insure all my bikes. $100/year is worth it to me vs. planning my day around going to court and saying “bUt thE lAw SayS yOu dOnT NeEd InSurANCe”

I've got 21 mopeds and 7 motorcycles so insuring the peds isn't really an option for me personally. I will say it is worth having theft coverage if you do insure your stuff.

What carrier?

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

I've never bought insurance, but then, I don't ride in a lot of traffic but rarely. Don't ride up into the middle of Columbus anymore since Handy Bikes quit mopeds.

Need insurance maybe in city traffic, not country roads like I ride on. I'd have to insure three peds. Nah,baby,Nah.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

@ Ken, progressive is about $80 a year per bike, goes down some the more you have covered.

I had a $300,000 a year policy on my boat that was only $80 a year

We have several Mopeds and I ride/repair/test and tune several a year so I just want insurance that would insure for any moped I ride

I can’t find a carrier that will do that,

I can’t pay for insurance on the several bikes my son and I have have then call for insurance every time we test drive, tune or work on a bike It would be like 20+bikes a year,

I Would like just basic liability for any bike we ride and I haven’t found any carrier that would do that in my area

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

I see your dilemma, I know you can get a policy like that for cars, never had to, but if you get busted for no insurance in MN they make you get a policy like that to keep your license even if you don't have a car! Never heard of it for motorcycles though.

Your mopeds should be covered by your homeowners insurance. They are covered the same way a bicycle would be. Of course you should call your insurance company and confirm this, but that’s what I always did. So roff, you already have your ideal policy. Although if the moped exceeds 20 mph it’s no longer a moped so it gets kinda sketchy there.

Despite this I got a separate policy for my bikes through progressive. I pay $166 a year for five bikes.

You need a dealer plate to insure multiple unlisted bikes it is frightfully expensive.

Quadruple stack uninsured underinsured.

When you get hit and ran on you get 40gs.

Full boat is 88 a month. Progressive and dairyland have just moped policies.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

Yes in Ohio Progressive does issue moped insurance policies. You get an actual insurance ID card along with it in the mail just like any other policy

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

I'm insured by progressive for 5 cars and a truck. I'm thinking about Liberty Mutual with the Emu,LOL, and they claim you only pay for what you need. I guess I'll check it out. I only drive one vehicle and the van in FL and 2 vehicles and the van in OH.

Re: Moped Insurance Ohio

I can add mine to my moto insurance I think an extra bike at this point is like 30 bucks a year. but also I go through bikes so frequently it doesn't make sense to add the extra hassle of changing insurance too.

I insure mine in Ohio. Plus If I take it to another state I’m good to go.
