Just a rough idea, but view the MK port map below
With a ~10mm hole, you would have a portion of the stroke where the intake would flow straight out the exhaust, causing a complete loss of pumping pressure.
Also, carb on the ground isn't crazy. The Laura M48 motor has an underslung carb, as does the Vespino motor.
In a lot of ways, it makes sense to have your carb away from upward-rising heat. Keeps the fuel and air colder, so it's more efficient.
