I have a 1981 Honda Express N A 50. There is nothing but a hole in the gas tank where the petcock is suppose to attach. What goes into the tank that the petcock attaches to?

sounds like the threaded bit might have broken off
mia BUNG
Are u saying a nipple threads into the tank?
No on to the tank. on the the bung.
there should be a threaded piece of pipe sticking out of the tank, that is welded to the tank
if ya know a welder then this bung maybe
and a 10mm petcock

that's if your tank is not compromised, cowa bung a
Thanks for all the comments. What I’m trying to find out is how was the bung originally attached to the tank, since whatever was there has been removed. There is no sign of welding or anything else that would indicate how it was attached.

Post a pic of what you have .
So, are you saying that cock should go in the bung hole? Maybe this should be off topic or on another site altogether.
not often someone needs a Bung, not often you read Bung or know what a Bung is, funny word Bung, It is a Bung that's MIA get edumacated pllllllllllleaseeeee
Remember back when Wendy's had the tables with the antique newspaper ads printed on them? There was an ad for a bunghole borer.

On the right is the oil line.
Doesn't look like it was ever welded for sure.
Inside of the hole threaded?
The mia bung was not "welded" on it was Brazed on and later twisted/broken/sheered off. To verify for yourself just hit it with a wire wheel and you'll see the braze yellow or whatever color they used, looks reddish.
what pat said, second that. it doesnt look like it was ever welded cuz it wasn't it was brazed and is broken off. braze a new one in or just seal it up and run off the other hole. Or if that other hole is for separate oil reservoir just drill em together and run premix with an expanded gas capacity. Or get a new tank.
In the past I just welded a spare barrel adjuster screw onto a hole drilled in a tank, and that totally worked
Also to the above double entendre theres a package store I think it was Salem; coast north of boston anyway called Bunghole Liquors. Nice.

What is a barrel adjuster screw, and where can I find one?

oh, it's basically just a screw with a hole down the middle. I'm not suggesting you should use that exactly - just explaining a simple creative solution to macguyver some shit with some parts alotta moped folks have laying around, they come on your throttle and carb top and brake cables etc etc. and when you buy new cables, you usually get new ones so you got some of these rando pieces around that are effectively little metal tubes, and honestly all you need to get a fluid out of a metal container and into a fuel line is a little metal tube
so yea, in short, anything works. grab a hollow bolt, or a barrel adjuster, or a piece of metal tubing or a coupler nut, or a drilled out grease fitting or a proper hose bung --- anything roughly the right size to jam fuel line on and have it get outta the tank.
It does look like it had a "welded bung" look at the picture at this site. CLICK HERE
I would just braze in a barbed fitting and be done with it. Make sure you clean out the gas vapors/residue before putting heat to it
How aboot a Rivnut / nutsert. If sealed with a fiber seal it might work.
