Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

I got a derbi Variant from a friend on the cheaps. Frame wheels and a box of motor shit. I've build a couple ratty peds but this is my first ground up paint and all build

Crank was pretty bad. Rear pulley cheeks we busted from when PO tried to use a three jaw puller to take them off

Gears were in surprisingly great shape

Everything cleaned up pretty good crank was OK after some time with a Dremel and wire brush

IMG_20200406_141746540.jpg

Frame was ratty enough for me to try and paint it

I think variants look really utilitarian so I went with an OD green and black color scheme. But I really I couldn't decide so I went with subdued colors

IMG_20200507_102243892.jpg

Mini ramp turned into a spray booth

I bought the forks off of here, they're from whatever variant has the bars that lock into the front forks, as opposed to a handlebar clamp

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

If I do this again, I'm going to either not bother with paint, or go full retard and spray it with a spray gun. Even really good rattlecanning just isn't a tough enough finish

IMG_20200510_150403379_HDR.jpg

I got the rear shocks off of here. The rubber bushings were fucked and they were missing the metal insert. I took the bushings off a Peugeot and had a friend machine the inserts for me. I really with I had a lathe myself

Brandon Weiss (Detective brandon to you) /

A lathe is on my list of machines to get as soon as I have space. Looking forward to more of this

Re: Derbi build

Great work. Its cool to see these things get brought back to life.

Re: Derbi build

I was fucking around with some vintage Yamaha forks I had laying around but I chickened out because of the weight.

Still looking for a set of KX forks or something

IMG_20200417_130545_01.jpg

Re: Derbi build

The derbi could take the weight of those kx forks. Should be fine and added safety.

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

What I mean was the weight of the forks is too much. Those are off of a 70s Yamaha street bike

I think those forks looks great. How heavy are they? Im a noob so why is that an issue to be worried about?

Re: Derbi build

A little extra weight up front might be a good thing .

Help keep it well planted . ;)

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

The forks are from a '79 Yamaha 550 or something. I have them from a bobber project my brother was gave up on. They have to weigh at least 40lbs without the wheel and surprisingly the head tube is too short for a Derbi. They might end up on a maxi ripper I'm in the middle of though.

Kinda phoned it in on the wheels. They look OK.

Just over painting so I can start tuning

At the urging of the treats guys I did the one way bearing mod. Went pretty smooth.

IMG_20200623_191720554.jpg

Hogged out (somewhat) and polished up the stock intake

IMG_20200623_201048723.jpg

Finished the back wheel and got excited and threw together what I had done

Re: Derbi build

A less shitty shot

IMG_20200623_204458382.jpg

Pretty bummed about the forks they pretty fucking shoddy even after being rebuilt. I've been looking for some KX or YZ shit locally, no dice. Those GS550 forks are starting to look tempting

Re: Derbi build

My forks clack over every pothole gonna try and fill em up with grease to attempt to have a little more dampening

Re: Derbi build

I really like the way derbis look with not derbi forks.

well "like" is maybe generous, but i think they look better anyway

Re: Derbi build

That thread with all the derbi fork swaps is nice. I'm sure I could Fandango something but I don't have a working welder right now and relying on other people to fab shit is awful.

Re: Derbi build

Overpriced Parts /

I hate seeing rusted to crap crankshaftson

it boils my blood,

so much that could be avoided if people just didn’t leave the top end off and then let it sit out in the elements Or spray some fogging oil in it whatever,

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

The story goes that a pair of derbis were bought by a dude new. Maybe 5 years ago his sons ghost rode them into a drainage ditch. There were totally filled with water. My homie bought the pair for a ludicrously low sum. And now I have one. It would be funny if it wasn't moped abuse

nice job

Re: Derbi build

Whoo ran it today, first time on my frame setup.

No brakes yet because fuck that rear brake setup. I have an old cable but it doesn't match my levers? Oh well. Still waiting on axle tensioners from DOS, bless those derbi Bros

Set the timing to 1.8mm BTDC

Still trying to figure out a good place to put the ignition, if anyone has a suggestion that would be great. I hate where the stock ignition sits, not something you can really tighten down

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

Oh and I can't Ollie, I picked skateboarding up again a couple years ago to pass the time on tours and I stick to transition riding, like an old fucking man.

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

I have a stock cylinder with the infamous "no window" piston

Going to cut the window on the all the way to the skirt, and try my hand at chopping up the piston when I get the balls

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

Came out pretty good I think

I don't know how far to take this, doing more research

IMG_20200626_192504531.jpg

Shined up the mating surface

IMG_20200626_192456216.jpg

Started polishing up the exhaust port

IMG_20200626_192447868.jpg

Re: Derbi build

Wesley Ambrosini /

Piston is chopped

Going to do an A/B tomorrow with a stock non ported cylinder and the ported

Re: Derbi build

Scrambler vibes I think

IMG_20200629_185642368_HDR.jpg

Still on the stock jug, 15mm Bing, Puch pipe hack n weld, 21 grams variator weight and this thing rips.

Definitely need to add a little more weight when I put the ported jug on
