you could replace the spring if you can find one.

Replace all your bearings split cases blind bearing it make motor run smoothly gears ok to run make sure shims are in proper spots mopedjunkyard should have sprag clips

So the wire is a sprauge clip.

Treats also has the sprag clip. It just keeps your pedals in position while riding. Without the sprag clip your pedals will rotate a bit with the engine. Tomos are easy to work on and parts at the ready. Have fun!

My buddies tomos had that wire spring broken as well, would rattle on the upshift and when cruising under light load. All fixed up now from a spare engine i had laying around. Tomos transmissions are noisy from the factory.

I have since machined the Treats clutches on my lathe. Thinking about making some tooling to do this more perfectly. These going in my A55 which is down now to rebuild clutches and fix whine by replacing 1st gear. Bushings still out of stock. Also going to balance the clutch components including the bells on the A55. Will revisit the A35 if this smooths things out.

When I replaced the first gear (big gear) which had a very worn bushing, the whine went to zero. As in nothing. I also changed both of the cover bearings.

The A55, I didn't have a bush or replacement gear. It wasn't as worn and wasn't as loud. Still, I have the bush on the way from Treats.

The whine comes from the gear running sloppy which means the clearance in the teeth of first gear is wrong. Yes, straight cut gears can whine. But this isn't a high horsepower formula 1 car or race bike. I don't think we are making enough power or turning enough R's through enough straight cut gears to make much noticeable noise.

Also, the clearance on the bushes that are sold for this is too high. If the noise returns, I'll make my own. They come with some kind of internal sheet material (teflon?) glued to the inside of the bushing. I'm thinking this is some shortcut to actually making a proper bronze or oilite bushing. The play is still to high even though quiet. If I have to make them, I'll buy oilite bush and machine od and id to get a perfect part. These bikes are built to a price.
