A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Dave Thacker /

A35 with 1st gear whine which continues lightly into 2nd. Read everything here I can find. Of course the bush is wore out on 1st gear. Clutches worn but usable. All bearings not smooth. I've new clutches in the Treats cart.

1.Does anybody have the number of the cover bearings?

2. The bearing shown which remains in the case I presume cannot be changed without splitting the case? I do have a lathe and could make a tool to pull it if it's possible to get the main drive gear out of the way.

3. Notice I have chipped teeth. Ordering new 1st and 2nd from Treats.

4. Notice the metal wires in the cover. These are too long to be needles. Not sure what they are from and could use your ideas. (I didn't have time to take the starting sprauge apart so I'm suspecting that but it works perfectly.

I noticed he clutch bell was ticking or lightly rubbing the outer most gear. Planning to order a few shims since they are cheap to set this up better on reassembly. Opinions?

1st and second show some wear, the tips of the teeth on either slide of the tip flat are sharp as razors but I'm replacing them anyway. The pinons on the clutch show polish but no serious marks or chips, they must be harder.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

clean it and put it back together, whirring is normal. crunching is not. your teeth arent missing enough meat for it to really matter

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

oh those wire pieces are a spring that fell off the middle assembly and got crunched up in the teeth. it looks like a hook. stops the one way bearing from damaging itself.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

you could replace the spring if you can find one.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

all tomos r whiny, the dimple is from the jacked up sprag. if you gonna toss that stuff id buy it.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Replace all your bearings split cases blind bearing it make motor run smoothly gears ok to run make sure shims are in proper spots mopedjunkyard should have sprag clips

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

I don't see a place for a spring that is missing. Can you define that any more? Where to look?

Thanks for your answers!

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Dave Thacker /

So the wire is a sprauge clip.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Treats also has the sprag clip. It just keeps your pedals in position while riding. Without the sprag clip your pedals will rotate a bit with the engine. Tomos are easy to work on and parts at the ready. Have fun!

I will say, the new clutch packs from Treats are GARBAGE. Not machined. No clearance for the clutch spring. Left a proper review for them. Warnings were on the single shoes but since I wanted sets I didn't see them. I don't mind paying a proper price for good stuff. $66 for garbage down the drain. Now back to trying to get it together in spite of crap parts.

whoa

Ok, got her done. Of course the sprag clip was gone. I did replace it. Reused the old clutches. Don't ever buy the aftermarket stuff from Treats that looks like OEM. It's shit. Replacing first geat (big gear) got me a new bushing and eliminated the whine. Even though I douched it out with a full can of brake clean and was maticulous with everything, a few minute run and drain the oil produced more metal shavings that dislodged from wherever. I changed it 3 times in all. The last time it was clean, no metal. I'm going to do it again. Checked my A55 Tomos and the clutches are gone but no apreciable metal inside. So, it's time to buy some OEM Clutches for that one or reline the factory shoes. So there, you can get rid of the whine. It comes from the big ear being able to run too close and out of parallel with it's spur on the clutch. I didn't like the fairly loose fit of the new part but it eliminated the noice. The original was flopping around like crap.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

My buddies tomos had that wire spring broken as well, would rattle on the upshift and when cruising under light load. All fixed up now from a spare engine i had laying around. Tomos transmissions are noisy from the factory.

Also there is a YouTube video of how to reline your clutch shoes.

Happy motoring.

Magnetic drain plug...

Already ordered 2. Never run without one for now on.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

My tyranny is quiet now. Zero whine. A light rattle might be the internal chain????? Replaced the sprag spring of course. Doing an A55 now.

I have since machined the Treats clutches on my lathe. Thinking about making some tooling to do this more perfectly. These going in my A55 which is down now to rebuild clutches and fix whine by replacing 1st gear. Bushings still out of stock. Also going to balance the clutch components including the bells on the A55. Will revisit the A35 if this smooths things out.

i have recently relined the clutch with leather instead of the original cork padding, works like a charm

You are first at bat. $60 delivered for 2 first gears, 1 second. Here is a shot of another 1st. Been redoing clutches in all 3 of my bikes.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

A lot of the noise of the tomos trans is the strait cut teeth on second gear. That and general sloppy tolerances.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Jesse,

When I replaced the first gear (big gear) which had a very worn bushing, the whine went to zero. As in nothing. I also changed both of the cover bearings.

The A55, I didn't have a bush or replacement gear. It wasn't as worn and wasn't as loud. Still, I have the bush on the way from Treats.

The whine comes from the gear running sloppy which means the clearance in the teeth of first gear is wrong. Yes, straight cut gears can whine. But this isn't a high horsepower formula 1 car or race bike. I don't think we are making enough power or turning enough R's through enough straight cut gears to make much noticeable noise.

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Yea, they have sloppy tolerances and poor gear face finish, so they clatter a lot. But they work. So whoooooo!!!!

Re: A35 Transmission Whine and Whirring

Dave Thacker /

Also, the clearance on the bushes that are sold for this is too high. If the noise returns, I'll make my own. They come with some kind of internal sheet material (teflon?) glued to the inside of the bushing. I'm thinking this is some shortcut to actually making a proper bronze or oilite bushing. The play is still to high even though quiet. If I have to make them, I'll buy oilite bush and machine od and id to get a perfect part. These bikes are built to a price.
