1978 NC50

Just picked up a 1978 NC60 (orange) to go with my 1980 NC50 (yellow). I made the mistake of trusting the seller and just wanting another Express. So I probably over paid. Decent condition for the age. Has the coil for starting as those can be a pain to find or turn into a kickstart. Has the known issues of the tank leaking between the gas/oil. So need to just mix the gas/oil. Overall not bad. It is not running as the carb is not getting gas in the bowl. So I am giving the carb a bath in carb cleaner and then will blow it out with air.

Don't soak the whole carb in carb cleaner, or atleast remove all plastics and rubber seals, as it dissolves plastics

I took everything apart and off. However great advise as I made that mistake before.

Re: 1978 NC50

Check the petcock, they can get gummed up, also make sure your tank vent is open and actually clear.

What is this? I have my 1978 Express running great however just received a new headlight with a replaceable A-3625 bulb and it’s not working. If I connect directly to the battery it works just fine. So I am guessing it has to do with this piece being fried. So I am looking to replace it or if I can bypass it. Last piece to get this moped done is the headlight!

What I thought to be an easy end of the build has me scratching my head. Can’t wait to just enjoy it instead of coming up with new (not nice) vocabulary words

Or , 2 -3 times that at a dealer .

Or , 1/3 that if you don't mind waiting for China . ;) (edited)

So all I need is this and the 2 red wires on the + side and the 1 white on the - side?

On a side note. Where is the best place to get a big bore for this? Will be a winter upgrade so if I need to order from China and wait I am ok with that. This moped is going to my college daughter. Take your newer mopeds and enjoy what everyone else has. This is nostalgic and just way cooler

Re: 1978 NC50

You might need to figure out what caused the problem before replacing and burning out another

I got it this way so not sure when or how it happened. However if you know a good way to figure it out I am all ears! I get confused and lost when it comes to wiring

Re: 1978 NC50

I'd be checking wiring closely .

Could be a grounded hot wire or simply loose connection(s) .

All connections should be shiny clean and scratch tight . That includes all grounding points .

Here's a free downloadable service manual to help :

Re: 1978 NC50

if run without a battery the bulbs blow, (ask me how I know) , perhaps that damaged the piece in question? Make sure batt terminals are tight and insulated from everything in the compartment. That's how I fried my headlight.

Thanks! I will be looking at everything I can see. Bunch of wires in the frame that you can see. Wouldn’t think the short would be in the frame as wires are less likely to move and rub. Hope I am not wrong about that thinking

Re: 1978 NC50

The terminal came off my batt whilst thrashing around on mine and popped my high beam, the only one that worked, tail light gone too...mine is still a project, I like it, but too slow to be useful, it's a shame how traffic has devolved, hard to make a fast Express, it CAN be done of course, but you are limited by gearing, the 2 speeds are better, the Hobbit better yet, best moped I have ever owned. Think hard about the big bore thing, these bikes are not plug and play. If I lived an a Maybury type city would never sell it. :)

Best to disconnect , clean and adjust for scratch tight connections .

Just because a connection is tight doesn't mean it's viable .

And , I can't stress enough : always insure a shiny clean , scratch tight ground connection . All of them . ;)

That happened to me. It’s from the rectifier touching the condenser on the coil, I believe. Keep them separated. Heat will kill the rectifier. (edited)

Thanks for the advise. Once I get the part I will be sure to keep them separated
