Just picked this up for cheap. Mostly complete, missing floor boards and whoever took it apart lost all the hardware, so that blows, but it's cool and crusty, and the motor isn't locked, so that's a plus.
wait till u see the transfers
I kinda like that rusty red color . ;)
oooooOOOOOooooooo
"patina"
Another great find...you are on a roll!
Can't get this bitch to start. Cleaned and checked all stator coil wiring, cleaned mag, new points and condenser, tried external condenser, swapped ignition coils, plugs, cleaned grounds...
I'm wiring it straight to the coil so no harness problems.
Friggen nothing.
Nevermind. Hooked up a 12v triumph coil and got enough spark to kill a deathrow inmate.
Now I got fuel problems...
Bigger jet, fired right up. Now I can put all the rust back on it. And order some tires...
If you’re serious about keeping the rust finish, you can look up some stuff on browning process.
I’ve used it on a black powder gun build. Just rust, smoothing it out, rust, etc until there’s a solid smooth surface layer. Then oil the hell out of it.
You can... probably skip the first steps. Looks like a pretty even layer of oxidation there.
It's more oxidation than rust. Spots I got greasy turn red if I rub them out (phrasing...)
I'm gonna get rid of the fart box and build a pipe for it, chop the bars and weld them into Clubmans, and I might add a top tube. I've got a bunch of 30mm pipe.
Just ordered some cool tires from the UK. Chambrier ribbed whitewalls.
As far as rusting stuff goes, I use hydrogen peroxide and salt in a spray bottle on bare steel. Instant rust while you watch. I'm pretty good at the fauxtina thing.
Speaking of rust fauxtina, this is a 1941 western flyer tall tank I had a while back. Sandblasted every thing to bare metal, hydrogen peroxide and salted it, painted it, chipped it up, and made it look old. Good enough to fool most hardcore collectors. Not that I would, I just wanted to experiment with painting.

$10 for ‘fart box’...let’s make a deal!
Done and running.
Custom floorboards, Brooks saddle, chopped down bars, everything works. Gonna go on a liquor store run to see how well it rides.
That engine rail guard thing is sick
nice to see a rusty dead ped runnin sweet.
Looks beautiful . ;)
Great engineering/mechanic-y stuff!
Nice! I saved a crusty Pinto and two Jawa like this. The rest, engine rebuild, etc.
Wow, that is sick! Where did you find that moped, Death valley?
Lake Forest, CA. Not exactly a desert. Not sure how it got so oxidized, but I like it.
Except for the piece of crap SHA carb. Finally got it to stop leaking everywhere, and now it won't run right. Jetting is way off and I only have a few to play with. Time to start soldering and drilling.
I love my Carabela, only downside is you can’t really kit them and the ignitions are timed differently than regular V1s.
The engine cradle is probably my favorite part. Mine also came with metal pannier kinda things that each fit three 12 oz cans 😎
oh you can kit em with a spacer :D
There's other weird things about it, too.
Like the cylinder cast in two pieces. There's a seam running across the ports where it was put together. That seems like it's begging for airleaks.
And I put blue springs in the clutch and it went nowhere, slowly. Just revved up and slipped away. Took it back apart and made sure nothing was binding or whatever, tried again and just kept on slipping.
Put the stock springs back in and it's fine.
The petcock is on the left of the tank, and the carb inlet is almost directly across from it at almost the same height, on the right.
My shocks and forks don't move.
It's got a big-ass clutch lever.
Brake switches mounted on both levers.
And I hate Sha carburetors.
You gonna be rolling this to Donut Derelics?
Whoa! This is awesome!!!

When I get it to run good, yeah.
It's fighting me every step of the way.
It has a lot of internal corrosion from sitting around forever. My first goal was just to get it running, and I did, and it seemed to be running strong. But now, little things are acting up.
All the corroded aluminum is breaking down. Pulled the cover and fan off and there's white chunks and dust all over the mag and points. Cleaned it all and retimed it.
The carb is what's killing me, though. Had the usual inlet leaks on the crap Sha setup, fixed that, and the jetting is off. It four strokes and sputters and won't get up to speed. Gotta order jets, and maybe a new carb.
I'm gonna make an intake for a mikuni I have and see if that solves it, and if it does, I'll buy a new carb and some jets, because I need that mikuni for another bike.
This thing went from easy peasy to throwing wrenches status.
