? For MB5 owners in Michigan

Collin Marshall /

I know these bikes seem to be love, hate but I've always been a huge Honda fan. And with my recent interest in mopeds that MB5 kind of seems to be the best of both worlds!

Looking into the Michigan moped laws, they seem to be way different from when I was young, as of today it states:

The engine must be under 100cc (pretty sure this used to be 50 lol)

Bike can not have a gear shift

Bike an not exceed 30mph on a level surface (thought this was 35mph)

My concern is the gear shifter, I know these bikes are 5 speed. my question is have you ever been called out on your bike being a manual resulting in a ticket?

Tldr: have you ever been called out on your bike being manual in the state of Michigan?

Cops don't know the laws and neither does the SOS. You will be fine.

Yeah, if the cop happens to be smart enough to call you on it, blame it on a stupid SOS employee or just play dumb yourself. You'll be fine

At least get it insured, if they pull the motorcycle card on you, the charge for no insurance is XXX times the price of a 100.00 Progressive policy but the fine for no registration is about what the reg would cost. Or go the whole route and then there's no worries.

Re: ? For MB5 owners in Michigan

Concur with all the above post, but keep in mind the following:

Has manual transmission (and more than 2 speeds) = motorcycle

Over 30 MPH = motorcycle

Why you usually get

Pulled over: You are going over 30 MPH or street speed, lights out, etc...

Infractions:

You got pulled over for a particular reason

Motorcycle requires plates

Motorcycle requires insurance

Motorcycle requires endorsement

You sign a declaration at SOS about your knowledge of the bike

Potential crime beyond civil infraction... Just know so you aren’t surprised .

We all have “dirty” bikes, just

Be sure you know how to talk around it.

When living in Kzoo, had plenty of incidents with the police who were amazing and very reasonable, however not everyone/every town is okay with it.

All that said, rock it. You’ll be fine as long as you aren’t acting a fool.

Thanks for all the responses @ everyone who commented.

Don't have the bike yet but am going to begin my search.

What I'm going to do is just register as I am able to in my state. I do have an endorsement, If I can get someone to insure it even better if not. I'll just be "responsible"

When this c19 garbage is done I want to come to a rally out in kzoo!

That's what I would do. If you have your endorsement already just do it right. Also if you get into an accident riding "dirty" your insurance company or if you hit someone their insurance is gonna go after you and you could even get sued. Just be responsible. Not sure how laws are there but here in maine you can register a motorcycle as an antique if it's over 25 years old. Dont have to do a state inspection. Just have to sign an affidavit saying you are not using it as your primary mode of transport. Have to have another vehicle registered also not as an antique. Costs me the same to register and insure a motorcycle as it does a moped here. Sucks

Re: ? For MB5 owners in Michigan

Since the moped registration is kind of an honor system thing, it’s an easy way to get a non titled bike paperwork. The MI registrations will transfer like titles to any state that needs a title. It’s also very cheap ($15 plus tax on bike, again honor system). They just do a VIN background check and as long as it’s under 100cc they don’t come out check your trans or measure your top speed.

As far as getting pulled over, you’ll only do so if youre speeding over posted limit, riding with no tag or have no lights at night.

Getting in an accident is where is gets muddy. I would assume if you had an improper registration for what the law views as a motorcycle and you were riding without endorsement or insurance you could get fucked

Re: ? For MB5 owners in Michigan

When you find a bike to buy , be sure to get a bill of sale , at least .

Without that , Michigan can and likely will be hard to get it registered .

They will want a 500 dollar bond to protect themselves .
