First time owner please give me all the info!

Hello all...long story short. I've always wanted a moped so I finally got one (1978 Garelli Gulp-Matic Deluxe) and don't know a single thing about "mechanics" cars, motorcycles, mopeds...nothing. So if you could link me to the best threads or give any information that would be great...I may not know anything but I'm a quick learner and I will obsess.

Some topics to get the ball rolling:

How to get it running consistently (jet is clear, carb seems clean...had it running for about 15 seconds now it won't run)

What cable to use to replace throttle cable...long? medium? specific length (the one on it wasn't flipping choke lever when fully twisted I tried adjusting and fucked it up)

What parts fit it in general (other garelli model parts? anything for an e50? I'm looking on treatland, moped division, lucky2stroke)

I want to clean the whole thing...is it wise to completely dismantle, clean and reassemble or will that create more issues when trying to run)

and tons more questions but this is my first round of inquiry...I'll keep researching but thought maybe i could get some good leads and not waste more time

welcome to the fun, a lot of the people on here that are elder statesmen of moped mechanics started knowing absolutely nothing.

Re: First time owner please give me all the info!

Do one thing at a time. Meaning, don't change the jets, timing, etc all at once. If you mess with everything, and it still won't run, you probably made it worse.

If you do one thing and it doesn't help, at least you can undo it and move onto the next thing.

Start with the basics. Fuel, spark, air. Don't mess with the carb if you don't have spark. And vice versa. Don't mess with the electrics if you don't have fuel.

And don't just buy stuff before you figure out the problem. Like, don't go out and buy a new magneto because you're carb isn't working.

Fresh gas, fresh plug, fresh filter. Basics.

I was the same way about golf lessons. I wanted to know it all right away. Imagine my disappointment when the first couple few lessons were all about the grip. Later I realized that that was all I could handle at the time.

Learn to clean your carb well the first time. I’m still working on that one. (edited)
