Mopeds in the back

laura ingalls wildin /

Long shot but has anybody tried fitting mopeds in the back of a KZJ71 Toyota Prado? This is a short wheelbase diesel import from Japan and I love it but I want to make sure I can fit my magnum in the back if I need to. I was actually considering using it as a kind of garage in winter months to keep my moped safe and dry. Thoughts? Here's a link to an example of the vehicle I am talking about https://www.yotaimports.com/listings/1993-automatic-kzj71-land-cruiser/

Re: Mopeds in the back

Cool vehicle, it looks like with the seats folded down you could get a bike in there, but kind of a high load height if you plan on using it as a "garage", a van is far better for the mobile garage thing. Contact the importer and have them measure the height and length of the cargo area.

Thanks! I have asked them for cargo space dims but concerned that it might not take into account uneven surfaces. I have heard there are tiedown points in the rear cargo area which is encouraging. Thought I might be able to get away with a heavy duty pet ramp to make loading easier. I'd prefer to get this rather than a van so I can use it for offroading/hiking/camping too. (edited)

Re: Mopeds in the back

A Chevy Astro/GMC equivalent will handle most off roading, especially if you get the AWD version, they can be lifted too, rolling a bike, even a moped, up a ramp looks far easier than it is. Getting parts for that Toyota could be an issue as it was never imported here. It is cool af though.

Re: Mopeds in the back

Pradoooooo!!!! I want one v bad. Not to shove mopeds into though. Get a delica or a Toyota ace instead

Thanks you guys!!! Appreciate the leads on other models to look into and also the feedback to revise my expectations if I do want to get this one which I love so much

Re: Mopeds in the back

This is awesome! I always liked the sidekicks, geotrackers , rav4 or the samurai. They are Stupid cars I know but really fun to play with, kinda like mopeds. This has a diesel? So adorable

So the geotacker had a magazine article that showed a full size dirt bike in the back row so you should have plenty of room. (edited)

Reminds me of a little truck my dad used to have, 1968 international scout.

I like the fact that it is diesel and Toyota! But it looks more like my Dodge Raider.

Re: Mopeds in the back

jsus fucks what a radmobile.

i'd bet it'll kinda fit if you make it but not easily, magnum's like the biggest moped and you're looking at shoving it in one of the smallest suvs.

I expect if you pull the front passenger seat out and have either short bars or foldable bars you could make it happen

i regularly shove mopeds in my samurai but they're poking out the back window or i've got the soft top[ off so theres unlimted vertical space.

with the passenger seat out it can fit but it's you, moped and nothing else.

if you wanna get stuff in a car, van. even like a minivan. minivans are pretty damn epic, previa is very affordable and you can do some fun/funny offroadage, siennas came 4wd i think

Re: Mopeds in the back

^ Sieana's are awd, different than 4wd..and only the newer ones, but you would be surprised where ordinary vehicles will take you, IF you know how to drive. That baby cruiser is awesome, but there are two issues that would make me crazy, parts finding, though it being a Toyota you should not need much but almost everything would be ordered from Japan, and the RHD, while that may be novel for a while I could see it driving me nuts long term. Oh, a third thing, it is automatic, god help you if you need to rebuild that in the US. For what you want to do I still stand by an AWD Chev Astro van, very tough, not a huge full size van, low load height, and you and the bike can sleep inside. But do you, get the Toyota if you are prepared for the challenge.

Your "Dodge" is a Mitsubishi, not that there is anything wrong with that, it is BETTER than most Dodges, lol, I'm watching an '87 Montero 2 dr, just a little older than what you have, VERY cool. I hope I can score it this spring. Sad thing is they rust bad, and it would ruin it to drive it in the winter, where it would be most useful, but if bought in the spring I could spend all summer coating it in bed liner...lol. Is yours a stick shift? LOVE it.

Re: Mopeds in the back

looks like a samurai, maybe a little bigger...

i can NOT fit a bike in the back of my samurai but i do have dual bike carriers on the front and rear for hauling.

a van would be better to double use as a garage... or like a toyota previa - they came awd (and s/c too for what it's worth) or a number of awesome vans.

Re: Mopeds in the back

there's a 2 door montero near me, and saw a raider that was badged pajero, kinda neat. i like those micro suv's alot. samurai wins for me, but if i had to go over 70mph ever, well, that just isnt in the cards.

also i dunno why i though sienna had a real 4wd, misremmbered but im really surrised it's the ONLY awd even? weird - you'd think there'd be more AWD ones at least. Looks like the aerostar has a 4wd version, that's awesome - those things are hillariously weird addition to the minivan segment. There was a weird chrysyler SUV/minivan, like suv-crossover but with sliding doors like 10 years ago too. can't find it now. and weren't astros AWD?

i want a 4wd van. damn

Re: Mopeds in the back

maybe i don't want a 4wd van haha

though this was a neat concept sprinter/camper in part w BASF

Because of the tall ceiling, you will probably be able to corner-to-corner fit it, with the bars flipped and the front tire off.

Re: Mopeds in the back

that lil guy is super rad

if you want to have a street-parked garage though fullsize vans or astrovans cant be beat, they are stupid cheap and lots of room, you can even hang out in there and work on stuff. Ever since buying my '95 econoline a few years ago i cant live without one. Wish i had done it years ago.

Early Toyota vans had a "real" 4wd option, tacoma stuff, very cool, super hard to find anymore. There was the Vanagon Syncro if you have a lot of money and are into self torture, but again very cool. The more modern awd vans from Toyota are much more for paved roads and not getting stuck at the mall, The Astro awd is the most rugged I have seen, seen several that have been lifted and they look as capable as their size permits. That thing from Chrysler was the pacifica, some were awd I think, but most are gone now, must not have been too great. (edited)

I have a customer who has me converting his Econoliner and adding a Westfalia top to it. I will post a pic of it later. He saw my Raider and wanted his own version.

Being a Carpet/flooring installer most times the several full-size or extended length van I owned over the years didn't fit in most parking garages but my Chevy Astro even being the bigger size 03-06 version fits in most concrete parking garages and holds three full-size magnums/revival type mopeds with parts with second row seats still in with doors closed,

Not the greatest mpg but I’m gonna keep my 03 Astro until till there’s nothing left of it,

I don’t need a full-size or extended size van anymore to carry or 12’ or 13.6” goods I just need a van to carry tools and equipment, the new typedelivery vans don’t fit in any garage,

Re: Mopeds in the back

That Westy topper on the raider is great!
