Yamaha RD60: Moped or Motorcycle?

Hey, I live in New Jersey, looking to buy a nice moped, came across a nice Yamaha RD60 that is the bike of my dreams. One problem tho: I realized the RD60 was 55cc and was wondering if it was still a moped or if it’s a motorcycle. In NJ law if it’s over 50cc it’s a motorcycle, but I have friends with legal mopeds that are 75cc. Could someone help me out on this? Thanks

motorcycle.

over 50cc, no pedals, 5 speed manual gearbox. It is in no way a moped by any legal definition.

Re: Yamaha RD60: Moped or Motorcycle?

Neither the RD60, nor your friends 75cc machines are legal mopeds in New Jersey. See:

New Jersey Moped Law

Thanks, new to mopeds and just wanted to learn. Figured out that I thought my friends had different bikes than they did.

Overpriced Parts /

Love the looks of a RD60 (and had one for a short while) but most mild kitted or many stock modded mopeds will blow it away

Only in it's stock form. If you mildly mod it mopeds don't stand a chance.

You can always register it in Vermont. Also, check out the megathread .

I got lucky and got the title with mine.

Re: Yamaha RD60: Moped or Motorcycle?

you have a untraceable vin because that bike was made before computers and it does not have a 17 digit vin. register it any way you want. use a pre title year and you are free from bureaucratic bullshit. save Vermont for 17 digit vins.

Awesome bikes, go for it.

Moped Lar (OFMC) /

With untitled bikes, Nj requires a side view pic of the bike to verify it’s a pedal assisted moped and not a motorcycle.

Eh, they only had about 4hp stock. I know it's a different bike but when I raced my buddies piped MB5 (made over double the hp of a stock RD60) with my mild setup 70cc Peugeot 103 back in the day it was (to my surprise) no contest, my bike ripped way harder.

Re: Yamaha RD60: Moped or Motorcycle?

I think the RD60 is the prettiest small motorcycle ever made, the tanks on ‘em are drop-dead gorgeous. You might have to jump through more hoops with licensing and endorsements but, if you really like it, then that’s part of the price.

They play nice with other mopeds.
