1981 Motocompo Build

Picked up a Motocompo a few months ago, rode it one block and it did 26 mph. Something had to change. Some people once said i should do a build thread so I guess here it goes!

Picked bike up and its in okay condition but plastics were a bit scratched up. pulled the plastics to go to paint.

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

Decided I didnt wanna mod the stock engine so picked up an express SR engine. Not down with oil injection and starter so I'm doing a half SR half Hobbit case. Plan is Treats crank, parmakit, dio vforce, vm18, HPI, etc.

Case was pretty crusty so I ported the top port on the SR side to match hobbit and then sent it off for powdercoating.

The stock motocompo engine is the same as a 1 speed Express engine except stamped different and I think has slightly better porting. The Express SR engine bolts on and is 1 in longer. The Urban express engine also bolts on but is 4 inch longer and Im not trying to stretch a motocompo.

Neat that the 8in motocompo wheel fits right onto the SR output shaft. Also minarelli horizontal clutch and pulley drops on. I hear I need to get a Dio bell for it all to work with no shims or spacing

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

Plastics painted and Decals on. Not quite done, my dude had issues with paint wrinkling and shit but it will be done soon. Looks better! Replica decals from ebay look pretty good. It's not perfect but gotta settle for 90%. plus I plan for this to be my rally bike so it will probably see some wear.

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

Time to make some intake stuff, Since PA50, NU50, NX50, NC50, NA50, NCZ50 all have pretty much different versions of the same engine (reminds me of Honda D, B, F, H, and K car engines) I figured id just make an intake that works for express stuff. Bought 2 MLM intakes and welded them together to get a perfect fit that lets me run a VM18/PHBG with side covers and allows the handlebars and seat to fold.

Gonna run with a vforce and trick adaptor. I'm happy

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

Decided I wanted to make my own pipe. All the pipes for Motocompo are very expensive ($450-$550) and are either super short chambered or go up under the plastics and are known to melt the plastics when making serious power.

I got an Express Peoples pipe and it bolts right on but looks dumb as hell and is super long and makes the Motocompo less transportable. The plan was to make an S curved pipe to keep the chamber close to regular length. I had to take sacrifices on the header length, but screw it.

I got supppper drunk and welded up the pipe. Turned out pretty good, I may have to make a small adjustment since it barely taps the plastics right now with the shock off. We will see once I put the shock back on if its okay or not.

Since its an S shaped pipe, im just gonna call it the "lil' Stinker"

Hopefully I can get it started on a PHBG in a day or 2. Gonna keep the OEM cable choke because the lever is so cute on the Motocompo

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

I do like it. It reminds me of those coolers on wheels with chainsaw engines, which gives me some ideas...

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

Got my NX50/PA50 case back from powdercoating. The guy did a fantastic job! Got the crank popped in. Gotta figure out how all the gearbox bits go into it but it’s a scooter so it can’t be that hard.

Pic of SR engine lined up next to the stock engine. Measures like 1-1.5 in longer from mount point to the center of the wheel.

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

More pics of engine mock assembled. Went with satin black for case and gloss black for the cvt and gearbox covers. I’m a huge fan the a subtle play in sheen of black working together (art degree bullshit)

Cleaned up gearbox parts in parts washer. Look pretty good, might be missing a few bits. I’ll figure it out.

super nice ''stuff-under-table'' moped

Re: 1981 Motocompo Build

I agree with Bas. We have a black cat and it blends in with dark colors so well. I went to my bedroom the other day and sat on a black and red blanket. I booted up my laptop to watch a dvd. My dog hopped on the bed next to me. I went to the kitchen for a beverage, started the tv show and got into 10 minutes of video before I looked at the dog and saw that the black cat had been on the bed with us the entire time. I had been disturbing his nap.

Oh, yeah, awesome restoration on a very interesting bike!
