Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Looks like us Massholes have to have plates now... and renewal has changed too. Still 2 years but renewal is in March now. I have to get ruddy plate mounts for my bikes. Arrrgh. Still no insurance for under 50cc and 30mph or less. But still. Plates. Sigh. Link below to mass.gov .

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Idk, in a way it helps, if bike is stolen? No ins is nice! We need title, plates and ins in the peoples republic of MN, it could be worse!

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Haha March is when my birthday is.

Is it going to cost more?

Do we need more then just a bill of sales?

A plate would be nice!?

I wonder if I can get a custom one ( dealer plate) or maybe a cape cod theme.

I hope they are small and not to big.

I really think they should offer a dealer or a collector plate. ( I should make one that I can attach to my back pack). (edited)

Still $40, no mention of designer plates on mass.gov that I could see but it does day it MUST be mounted to the rear of the moped. Still only a bill of sale, yeah.

I'm not looking forward to making new holes on my 'peds to mount them. It does seem to make us seem a little more like road worthy vehicles... of course I'm sure I will get the whole "tiny motorcycle" thing more now lol

Here in The Commonwealth of Massachusetts (lol) we have to have bill of sale with VIN or SID on it so if its stolen it is in the system. Yeah, no insurance unless it's over 50cc or goes faster than 25mph. Above that and below 40mph, it has to be registered and insured as a "limited use" motorcycle. Anything above 50cc must be registered and insured as a motorcycle. I'm not really complaining about the plate... mostly about the holes I will have to drill into my bikes :-/

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Terbo Speghetti /

My issue with plates has always been parking/locking up bikes. Gonna get a ticket if you're rocking a plate and you lock up on a pedestrian sidewalk. Or at least around here I do.

That's why plate pullers are a neato invention.

Or just be like every moped in Chicago and ride dirty lol

You rebel you LOL

Caution tho... making every motorized vehicle plated means we can't easily sneak by with our teeny little stickers anymore. I'd bet that the E-bike community isnt gonna be touched, but us 'peders are gonna need to watch our backs now. I don't support or condone law violation... buuuut I also dont have a single current registration on any of my peds yet ... that is changing soon however. #rebelnomore

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

I wouldnt be surprised if it's the first step in getting non-electric motorized bikes out of the bike lanes completely.

Using a ped to bomb over the Mass Ave bridge (or any bike line) during rush hour is one of the best perks of riding in the city.

Since every other college chode in town now has an E-bike, Im sure keeping the moped kids and the gacked-out chinese scooter junkies outta the bike lines will be the next restriction after requiring plates.

Honestly though?

Fuck it, if you see a cop just act like you're pedaling and im pretty sure 9/10 times they won't look twice.

I ride with a retro West German plate and just act like I'm old and don't know any better. A transit cop asked me about it but just out of interest, not that he gave a fuck about legality.

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Takes a while for the law enforcement folks to get up to speed on the laws. Plating mopeds is likely not on their highlight ist unless it is an area where the cops have reasons to be pissed off at riders in general because there are a few asshats who have ruined it for everyone. Laws in the jurisdiction I live in in CanadaLand plating became law in 1985, but here and other very rural places there are peds on the road without any plates. Not suggesting skirting the law, just mentioning some facts of how it is here in the middle of nowhere in Snow Mexican land.

Also your new plate law needs to be tested in court for a grandfather allowance if someone has had the same ped legally registered for a number of years.

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

I just got excited reading the thread titles when I saw Mas SACH ussets

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Haha you guys can still use the bike lane. Lol haveing a plate doesn’t change much. The cops do what’s called community policing, if you feel like the bike lane is more safe then the cops will probably be on your side about that when it comes to safety.

And you really think a cop has time to pull you over? The cop better really not like you

How did this go from haveing a small change in plates to a change in the laws?

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Jeremy Davenport /

I was at the Mass registry a few weeks ago to register my motorized bicycle (you need to register these as mopeds in Mass) and the lady there told me about them switching from stickers to plates for next year. She told me everything is the same as before except the only change is the plate.

"And you really think a cop has time to pull you over? The cop better really not like you"

Yes, Ive been pulled over twice for bullshit reasons

"How did this go from haveing a small change in plates to a change in the laws?"

This is Massachusetts, you know this shit happens.

We lost vapes for several months, just because. (edited)

Haha do they let you go?

Massachusetts isn’t changing any laws we are just jumping to conclusions as a group.

And we lost vapes becuase the health risk involved was to high ( willly Nelson is 86 and smokes weed daily) some teen age kid is sitting in a hospital bed right now after a few years of vaping from ether those stupid thc vape pens or from the ejuice. Just cuz? Naw dude we are saving lifes.

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Yeah I got my notifications from the RMV a couple months ago. Figure it's only a matter of time before insurance, title, inspection etc. I really hate this state sometimes.

off topic, but that's bullshit.

It's clear that this is meant more to deal with the vast number of now-deported scooter users. Even on the "Motorized Bicycle (Moped) Instruction Sheet" on the page it shows a scooter

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Someone mentioned dealer plates?

That would be sweet! Ohio plates just went up from $29 to $50 this last year. It wold cost me a grand to plate all my bikes if they were running.

There would have to be a break even point in setting up your "dealership" and getting a few dealer plates so you and your friends/family could ride. I wonder if a dealer actually has to sell a vehicle each year?

Interesting idea, though.

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

I at least partially agree with Lorenzo. The number of gas and electric scooter riders in suburban and urban areas have climbed exponentially with the easy access to chinese scooters fairly cheaply... and the modifications of the scooters are getting crazy. I follow a few MA scooter/moped groups and so many are getting the 2 year moped registrations then suping up the motors to do 50, 80mph + on those now illegal registrations which were, frankly, hard to see and easy to put by an officer. The move to plates makes it harder to fool them. I havent seen the new plates, but if they follow suit, they will have "moped" branded on them akin to the "motorcycle" on the according plates. The scooter community is a great group... but a few bad eggs have made it more difficult for the rest of us. I'm not a fan of the new plates but I understand why it has become needed. I think the plates will be fine, if a bit inconvenient. Change is inevitable. Mopeds are forever.

Re: Heads up- Massachusetts gets plates...

Lorenzo (Sanguine Synergy) /

I'm honestly surprised that it took this long for us to have to use plates at all. I always found it odd that we got effectively illegible stickers at all- especially with all the drunk folks who ride scooters because they aren't allowed to drive cars due to DUIs. The 2017-2019 sticker especially, dark blue with black text. It's pretty absurd.

But eh, as long as it doesn't cost more than $40 for two years then it's all good. We're already saving far more than that just because of how little gas we run haha

naw dude

the dumb ban took medical vapes of the market too

Vapes like ecigs , ejuice and prefilled thc cartridges this excludes herb vapes like volcano vapes where the user strictly uses herb only with no other additives.

We also ban flavored tobacco even menthol because it makes senses. You can still buy them in some towns.

They already had a problem early on with the thc cartridges and pesticides.
