Honda NC50 1980 Kick Start Return Spring - Does not return lever.

The ratchet start lever return spring is not doing it's job. The starter spring and ratchet assembly turns the motor over nicely as it should. But the starter return spring does not return the lever. I have installed a new spring. When installing, does the spring need a preload? I couldn't find any direction in the shop manual. I am pretty sure I am missing a simple step in the installation. Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Pic?

Yeah the manual is silent on a lot of that if I recall correctly. It's been awhile since I mucked with all that. Basically if you mess with it enough you'll get it. I'll look for pics. They are on this site somewhere.

You lined up ALL the timing marks before assembly right?

Three or four areas to watch out for. Following the order of these pics...

1).The starter drive assembly with its splines to one another.

2.) The tang in center of return spring mates to slot in drum.

3).The "clocking of starter gear assembly to case cover.

4.)Lastly, the ratchet gear to release paw. This will only work if all the aforementioned is correct. You will ratchet the starter lever two clicks or teeth to set preload on the entire assembly within cover. At this point the starter gear and chain should be taunt. This holds everything in place under tension while installing cover. Otherwise shit will fall out everywhere.
