I didnt keep my registration up to date the last 2 years and I want to get it updated, when I do a quick search there appears to be some hefty penalties. Are these penalties for all vehicles or is a moped exempt? Also a possible way around penalties is to sell the ped , say to a friend and buy it back again does that make any sense ?

all bikes are exempt in nys.
Pretty sure those penalties only apply to vehicles required to carry insurance.
So, it would depend if you have a Class C (insurance not required), or Class B or higher
(insurance required)
Your registration will say : LMC, LMB, etc,,
It is registered as a class 'C' so I it sounds like I am ok
Wait...if you have a class B and you don't ride it, and you let the registration expire, they fine you? I know it's only $6 a year for registration, but lets say you wanted or needed to put your bike away in storage for awhile, and didnt want to insure it or renew the reg...What do you do?
In NJ, whether you use it or not, you must keep your registration(s) current. If you skip a few years and then try to register it, they’ll make you pay all the years that it wasn’t registered.

Man, I hope Ohio law isn't that stupid. I have skipped yearly registration on a coupla of them I want to re-license. Guess I'll find out.

It's not. You just have to take the title and stuff to register it again cause they don't keep stuff in the system past a 1 year expired registration

Hold on, are you saying that all states dont hold on to the record of your registration beyond a year? So if I lost my registration document I will have to create a bill of sale selling the moped to myself to get a new registration ?
Don't you HAVE a bill of sale already?
Like everything else,it probably varies from State to State.

You don't need a Bill of Sale Don. With mopeds you just have to bring the new form filled out that you write the VIN on and sign to indicate that it's a moped

Don you may have to fill out this new stupid Ohio perjury paper form that makes any bike you want into a moped if you say it is since they got rid of the Ohio approved Moped list:

Bringing the old plate don’t work, it has to be a paper registration and they got to be able to find it in their computer.
I refuse to fill out one of those current registration forms so I only ride the bikes I have current tags for,
That temporary Ohio moped registration is going to change again in like two or three years with a new registration law,
ny is not ohio. all motorcycles are exempt because the state assumes you don't ride in the winter.
what nys does do is charge a extra fee if you miss a year.
all motorcycles are exempt and the penalties you talk about applies only to cars.

I went down to the DMV and had to fill out a MV-82. I believe I checked " Renew a registration In section "2" . At first they wanted me to turn in my old plate but after they asked for insurance and I responded that there is none for a class "C" she spoke to a manager it turned out they didn't need me to turn in the old plate.
they gave me a new plate a registration sticker and a registration document for $18.50 which is, I think a quarter cheaper then the 2 years registration missed and the current year registration combined.
What I dont understand is the need to give me new plates, they had all my information on the computer they even gave me my vin and weight of my moped to help me fill out the MV-82. Why is all lost if we dont maintain a registration on a yearly basis? I suppose its bureaucratic protocol.
