we agree that you have ac power in your house in north America, right? coming out of your NEMA 5-15 outlets.
stick a paperclip into the longer plug slot. notice no current passes through your body.
now try it with the short slot. let me know what you feel.
this is because the ac loop is grounded, bonded to earth on one side (neutral, white wire).
now get a 1:1 isolation transformer. ensure ground and neutral are not bonded (most are not). connect it to the household line power. repeat the experiment. notice how holding either "side" of the ac results in no shock. why is that? because the ac loop is floating--there is no path to ground.
