Vin number

Hawthorne Swan-Scott /

So I went to go register my newly finished Puch Newport but I was turned away because I did not have a vin number. The only thing that I can find is the serial number, and I know that in the 1980's mopeds started to have the full 18 digit vin numbers. Is there anyway that I could look up it up or a place that the vin could be other than stamped on the metal plate or the frame?

It's a 1977 Puch Newport if that helps

Re: Vin number

It's stamped on the aluminum tag on the right side of the frame and also into the frame by the seat post. It's early enough that it doesn't have the standardized 17 digit vin, that only became required in the mid 80's.

Re: Vin number

find the 7 serial number on the engine or stamped on the frame

if they dont match, dont panic, it just means the engine was swapped at some point

use the frame stamped number and fill in your 17 digit VIN on the reg form as follows:

00000000001234567

(1234567 being whatever your 7 digit serial number is)

I believe the 17-digit VIN came into effect in 1980, so you're fine, should be no problem.

It was 1981 that the 17 digit VIN became mandatory .
