Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

Hey y'all. New to the moped world, so forgive any noob mistakes.

I recently got ahold of a 1979 Pacer Deluxe. I finally got it running pretty reliably, but I'm only hitting around 23 on it. From everything I've read, I should be hitting closely to 30 in stock form. And it is SLOW to pull off the line.

Running a Delorto clone 14/12. Jet is around a 58 or 59. It wasn't marked on the clone so I have to eyeball it.

The only thing I've done is drill out the intake from a 12mm to a 14mm (cheaper than buying a 14mm intake on Treats). I got 1 extra MPH out of that.

Any suggestions? Kind of at a loss here. I want to make sure I have it running right stock before I start trying to squeeze more out of it.

Thanks!

I think your exhaust may be clogged.

good luck

You might need to install new crank seals in the engine. They get hard and brittle after 40 years and let in air from the ignition side and or oil from the transmission into the crank case. This can make your bike slow and impossible to tune.

Also check that your wheels are free moving and your brakes arnt draging.

What is your sprocket gearing and what model of engine do you have? MO1 or MO2?

That seems like a likely culprit. Hopefully the job isn't too bad? Dont wanna tear the whole thing down if I can avoid it.

It's the M01. Not sure on the gearing. I'll have to count it when I get home.

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

Jet's too big. 52 on stock14/12 is fine, depending on a few factors, like elevation, airbox, clear exhaust, spark plug, etc.

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

My MO1 had a 48 in the carb

I started messing with the jetting yesterday after getting a set of 50 range jets from Treatland. It was happiest with the 58 in there, but didn't want to idle. That said, it was brapping noticeably better with that size. Spark plugs still looks like it's running lean though, and it idles better with half choke.

From what I read, these clone SHAs actually come with a main jet around #68. Gonna fiddle with the 58 jet and see if there was something else up with it. But it seems like it wants something bigger. Gonna order a set of 60s from Treatland and try those out. Weird that it seems to want a jet that big for a stock motor, but I guess it wants what it wants?

Thanks for the help y'all, I'll post results.

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

First I replaced all the engine seals.

Mine Still has the stock mesh filter and box, though I pulled out half the screens and those lil plastic cylinders. Also installed mlm circuit pipe, one of those 3d printed sha slides, and I think I'm currently at a 66 jet.

Probably doin 30mph now with far better acceleration throughout. That carb slide maoe a huge difference in idle and low-end torque. (edited)

I've been looking at the 3d printed slides. I was trying to get him to send me the STL, since I have a printer at home, but no luck

Pipe is the next upgrade, just want to get it running good stock before making big upgrades.

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

Definitely replace the seals. I managed to pull mine out by drilling a tiny hole, screwing in wood screw, and then yanking each out.

Do they just press back in? Hoping to be able to do it without tearing the bottom end down too much.

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

Yes, you press or gently tap them back in.

Is this what I need then? Just want to make sure I'm getting the right ones, since there's about a dozen on Treatland for the M01.

Really appreciate all the help!

Re: Morini M01 - Only hitting 23?

Yep! That should fit.

Sweet! Thanks! Ordering tonight and should hopefully have her purring by next weekend!

Slapped in a #61 main jet and hit 32!! Still gotta replace the seals, and do a couple plugs chops to make sure I'm running good, but other than that she's performing great! Thanks everyone!
