Pawl pullstart special nut idea

Had this idea floating in my mind for a few days.

I consist of a 12mm wrist pin or maybe just a piece of steel rod

M8-M10 stubby Allen head bolt or maybe a hex head bolt and a washer.

M10 Tap

Cut the wrist pin down to size and tap it with a m10x1.00 ~ 1/2” deep ( this will thread on to the crank shaft).

Flip it over and tap another m10 to thread a stubby bolt onto the wrist pin with a washer in between ( use something like locktie or jbweld so the bolt will never come off)

This is all just an idea and I really don’t want to do it because I’m worried about not being able to remove it.

Mybe if I put a few tacks in it I would be more Tempted to run it.

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

Make a paw that threads onto crank shaft without extra bolts ot hardware. Like weld that paw to the flywheel nut.

It’s not possible you need about a 1/2” spacer with threads on it. The nut is counter sunk into the flywheel so once you add a paw there is definitely no way to grab the threads.

You could weld the nut onto a stubby piece of steel rod

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

I saw someone use a large lag bolt on a Facebook post, they cut the shaft at the threads then drilled and tapped it. They used that to hold the pawl to the flywheel.(edited)

Yeayea that went thrue my mind today but I just wasn’t the biggest fan of the idea but I’ll try it. Maybe I can mind a nice fat bolt.. do you know what size it was?

Thank you man!

I’ll makes sure to give you the bolt credit when I finalize the countryboy diy e50 1.1 version pull start.

I feel like All I’m doing is basically gather up these different ideas that have already been done by someone else & posting it all in one place for the people in a step by step tutorial.(edited)

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

I can’t find the post where I saw it, but I wanna say it was a 7/16 lag bolt.

"... , there is nothing new under the sun ." ;)

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

cant u just get a coupler nut?(they r long) chuck it and grind off the ridges making it into a shouldered coupler nut.

What about above the sun?

I don't know . I've never been there . ;)

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

Went to change out my cheetchrome pullstart paw set up on a different bike and the threads just got yaked again under torque. It was the last time I could chase the threads now I gotta make a special nut or I have two bikes with no way of starting.

Fuck. Cheeta chrome sell me some nuts

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

You need to modify those otherwise trashed cranks to suit your needs.

Yo could you Please explain, I’m about three bowls deep on some bombomb.

I got a few trashed cranks! How can I use them to my advantage? Mopeds gods please speak to me tonight in my dream! Diy paw/nut is now a high priority! I will sell them if I’m proud of the quality, that’s if anyone even rides mopeds anymore.

I could just make nast looking thing out of a washer and cover it up but I’m anal about this one.

Weld a hardened bolt (with the head cut off) of the appropriate diameter and length needed to the crankshaft and bolt that shit up directly. Find a good tig welder with 25+ years experience and pay em. If he/she's good enough they'll know how to center that bolt close to perfection on the end of the crank.

Would about if I just used a long coupler nut with a stubby bolt and washer!? I’m clapping my hands on the inside

I’m try to make this something that the average guy with a small tool selection could pull off.

Thanks for the ideas you got my mind thinking!

A m6 miniature clone! For giggles

Now the nut holds the paw and the paw holds the flywheel in place so if I bottom out on the crank I’ll just add a thicker washer or spacer.

No drilling or taping need? I’m confused and bored. It’s too good to be true

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

The more parts you add the more difficult it becomes to achieve perfection.

I going to cut the coupler to that same size!

I don’t know how long a m10 coupler is but I presume they are atleast longer then the og bolt.

The OG bolt is 20mm long and 8mm of those threads are grabbed by the crank. Il just cut a really stubby 5mm long m10 with a washer & weld that in place on the coupler. if the coupler bottoms out on the flywheel before tightening the paw down I’ll just add a thicker washer or I can cut the coupler shorter.

I’m pretty dam confident in this but I got try it first

My boys in chine already have the exact length I need! And it’s round!https://www.ebay.com/itm/ROUND-M6-M8-M10-M12-M14-M16-304-SS-Thicken-Rod-Connection-Nut-Coupling-nuts-/192289359385?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10&&var=492224250560&varId=49222(edited)

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

I had measured the og nut again becuase I can’t count the built in head and now the thread only measures 13mm So now I only have about 5mm of room at most! It won’t work with the normal pawl unless I cut a really stubby bolt about 2mm and cross my fingers ( should be okay with a tack or two)!

I can use this paw with a longer coupler because the bolt will sit so god dam deep but I’ll have to respace everything if I decide on that.

Mopeds gods be like fuck

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

I just want to see the video of this guy trying to run a hand tap through a wrist pin.

I retapped a m10 x1.5 to m10 x1.0 without drilling or anything and I don’t even have the correct T tool for the tap ( I use those pliers instead)

It’s the smaller taps that break easy. If you use aluminum you can get away with so much more compared to taping harden steel. If you tap with a drill make sure not to snug up to tight in the tap that way if the tap snags it will just break lose of the chuck.

Fuck tap oil use atf

I’m not the best rapper but I get the job done.

Chasing threads and taping are two different things but yea

Yea I break shit but I just don’t tell anyone.

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

"I just don't tell anyone" lmfao, that is most of my mechanical misadventures, at least I know what I did, so I can put it back right. :) (stock)

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

I might try this https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/american-grease-stick-co-brass-adapter-m10-x-10-inverted-to-m12-x-10-bubble-blf-36c/22190123-p?c3ch=PLA&c3nid=22190123-P&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_channel=online&store_code=&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqs3rBRCdARIsADe1pfQpxsTy9CpTx7izaEk39iTY5d6w7zxc5u6oIX3DZoqRy5OZeZxBubgaAuZwEALw_wcB

I can pick it up at the local auto store.

Worse comes to Worse I’m probably hellcoil the og nut. Waisted enough money to buy a hellcoil set.

I might brake down & buy some hex rod and have my local machine shop makes some actually nuts. (Probably the best idea)

I have two bike that don’t run right now because I have no way of starting them.

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

It may be better to make your pawl/nut from brass to keep from shredding the crank when things aren't 100%.

Or maybe just torch the hell out of it and let it cool slow to kill any temper it has?

I know Yamaha scooter variator nuts are purposefully made from a softer material to help save the crank in case of mechanic error or locked up kickstart parts.

Re: Pawl pullstart special nut idea

Yea yea yea thats what I was worried about most was stripping the crank threads. I end up breaking Down & taping some m6 Allen head bolts into the flywheel (but that didn’t work because I spaced them to far apart) so I tapped them to m8. I forgot who had this idea (he was building a fuel inject e50) anyways he keeps saving my ass.

Works great no problem, I’m calling it done unless it breaks. It’s a Built in paw at this point.
