Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

promised I would make a step by step on how to make an e50 pullstart. This has been done mutiple times in the past but I put my own spin on it.

Fist step find something that is a 1/2” thick. I decided to use some scrap plywood.

CCA2CEBA-C996-4D9B-AE9C-6FBDF5D0F7C3.jpeg

Then you’ll need to drill a 2” hole thrue the plywood.

Step 3: line up the hole in the plywood as best you can with the hole on the metal plate you received with the Pullstart.

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

Step 4: punch and drill the holes to mount the pullstart.

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

Step 5: drill the same 2” hole in the center of a stock flywheel cover. ( sorry forgot to take photo).

DADF95DE-3302-44D0-BB31-1BABD493C4E0.jpeg

Step 6: find some bolts and use them as pegs to hold pullstart on the plywood. Ull need to find the correct position to mount the pullstart before drilling thrue the flywheel cover. Do this by mocking it up on the bike & wrapping all three together with tape then you can drill.

This part can be tricky so take your time. You don’t want to mount it awkwardly where you can pull it correctly. (edited)

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

Step 7:drill and tap two m6 holes across from each other, down the center on that lip in the photo. ( if you have a hpi ignition you can skip this part. The hpi ignition already has the holes taped correctly for the bolts.)

Step 8: now use some stubby m6 allen headbolts with blue loctie as your paw. Make sure they don’t stick out the other side.

(edited)

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

Step 9: bolt the flywheel cover, plywood spacer, and pullstart together with m5 bolts about 35mm long. I ran the bolt out so I didn’t have to cut off, if it was to long and scrapped the flywheel.

I lined up a cheetahchrome pullstart with mine to show that the spacing is dead on.

Step 10: Mount the pullstart and give it a tug.

This is the pullstart that I used!

I know I probably could gave more information but I think this is a enough.

I dont understand why the wood is needed.

Adaptor plate for bolt holes, or spacer plate for clearance?

Your allen bolts are not symmetrical, your pawl is going to snap off because it can only grab one at a time.

Doesn't the pawl connect with only one at a time anyway ?

my builds need more wood in them

Nope, two at a time always, you need one point of contact on each side of the rotational axis to prevent it from just yanking apart the pull start.

Carry a fire extinguisher and spray for termites.

I recall seeing recoils with only a single pawl . I suppose those might have been defective , but ???

Yea the bolts are definitely not symmetrical or perfect. ( it was a pain in the ass to drill those holes). If you have hpi Igntion u can skip that step anyways. I don’t know about the paw snapping off. The pullstart paw is soft metal so even if you are off by a hair it will still grab both.

It wasn’t meant to be perfect Dillion. We both know my fab skills are still beginner status. Someone with a lot more skill could easily perfect this and throw out the wood spacer idea and make a 3d printed spacer.

Much appreciate and trust me there is good reason for the hate especially cheetah. I can understand cheeta, sorry dawg!

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

yeah no hate here, i agreed with cheetah 'i dont hate this'

its rad, its mopeds, make it work. if it breaks rebuild it stronger.

all i did with mopeds today was blue mine up on the way to work and put it in a van :(

I was merely offering someone constructive criticism as someone who is doing some CAD work to build some pawls in the future

Just Incase someone didn’t see this lovely pullstart I did Not make

I’m taking out the trolls

Fuck what you know

I’m on fucking patrol

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

When I started building pull starts the concept and design did not float to me in a dream. I stole and copied most of my design from other one off builders just like the one County Boy churned out.

I simplified and improved till I felt it was reliable then mass produced 900 of them.

That's why I always say "I don't hate this"

Yea yea, I just don’t want people to stop buying “off the shelf moped parts”. I like seeing the small shops produce moped & scooter parts. I would of never been able to build this pullstart without buying yours first lol

Here’s a photo of it mounted on my dirtbike

Cheeta if you sold just the paw, people could make a diy pullstart with a really good paw.

Chris Carleton /

Instead of plywood get a plastic cutting board . Great material . In the marine world they have Starbrite pretty much the same shit. A little softer than Delrin and a whole lot cheaper.

Yup I’m going to definitely do that! ^^^

Thanks for the idea!

I build dirt bikes now , I don’t even know why I built cafe racers, i only like coffee as a flavor.

Did you build that? Yea (edited)

One can often get UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) plastic at industrial fabrication shops. It's used for abrasion resistance and material handling. It is most often black, but available in different colors. White is food grade, and used in marine industry on fishing and processing vessels. It's super dense, and strong. Many different thicknesses available, from 1/8" to 4". It comes in 4' X 8' sheets, but fab shops will sell or give away scraps.

Yea I know what your talking about....Iv been to cape cod a few times.

That stuff I really dense and probably difficult to cut. I was think something like a ocean state job lot cutting board.

Stay gangster, So I can stay country

Re: Country boy’s DIY E50 Pull Start

Ive got some 1/2" white plastic cutting boards from a Subway. I could cut a peice off and send it to ya. Need dimensions so I can be sure its big enough.
