I'm wanting to put some modern shocks on the mbk 51 I'm building and the lightest motorcycle I've found with matching shock size is the new Honda Monkey, weighing around 220 lbs dry.
I've found these really nice shocks with preload and rebound adjustment
I'm wondering if they could work or if the springs would be too hard.
Has anyone successfully used small motorcycle shocks?
i would reach out to the vendor to see if they have spring rate specs.
i've looked into this myself for my chappy but the short length (280mm) means pickins are slim...
If size matches they'll usually fit, sometimes those external gas shocks hit the frame but can be run upside down depending on the ends. People use them often, risk is being too stiff but it's a close enough weight they shouldn't be too stiff, and they're adjustable.
Personally though, that's way too expensive for my mopeds
I put downhill mountain bike shocks
on my Vespa. They had them in 240mm at some point. and required light modification to fit right.I bought like 6 sets of springs until i finally settled on these at 68lb/in. It rides really nice and takes a beating.
I think these are way too short for you though.

I've thought about mountain bike shocks.low and high speed compression, rebound, and preload adjustment would be pretty nice. A lot of the roads here are as bumpy as mountain trails.They would require new shock mounts welded on the frame and a bit of tuning to dial them in.
Maybe I'll try some of the Doppler scooter shocks, which are similar to Fournales oleo-pneumatic shocks. They are adjusted with air pressure and seem to work well with mopeds.
They have a clevis mount on the bottom which should only require a spacer to fill in the excess space in the mount and sit flush against the top of the swingarm
